The Smart Bulb: Philips Hue

If you’re used to using your phone and voice to activate household tech, then why not give your lightbulbs an upgrade. For $50, the Philips Hue smart bulb will allow you to control your home’s lighting from your phone – or if you connect to an Alexa smart speaker – via your voice. You can connect up to 10 bulbs at once as well, and there is pretty much an endless amount of colors to choose from.

The Smart Thermostat: ecobee Smart Thermostat with Voice Control

Sometimes getting up to change the thermostat is just too much effort, and for occasions like that, Ecobee has this Smart Thermostat. This $250 Alexa-enabled thermostat allows you to alter your home’s temperature via your smartphone or via voice control. It also comes with a remote sensor that monitors ambient temperature and can adjust settings accordingly. And with Alexa built-in, it can even act as its own smart speaker – although that’s more of a secondary feature.

Smart Security: Arlo Pro 3

This Arlo system takes security cameras to a whole new level. This wire free set-up costs $400 and includes two cameras, but offers an array of advanced camera features, including 30 day cloud storage for your footage, package detection for deliveries and customisable activity zones, which can all be monitored via your smartphone. Techradar labelled it their best security camera pick, praising its video quality and its ability to integrate with other smart home devices, like those with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Smart Home Voice Assistant: Amazon Echo Dot with Clock (3rd generation)

Voice controls are at the center of a lot of smart home devices. Amazon’s Echo Dot still remains one of the best smart speakers, and it’s massively compatible with a lot of other smart home devices too, including the aforementioned light bulbs and thermostats. With the $85 Alexa-enabled Dot, you can get quick access to everything from weather reports to restaurant reviews. And it’s great for playing music during parties, too. Although you can get it without a clock, we’d recommend going for the clock version, especially if you plan to have it it your bedroom.

Before we reveal our last pick, here are a few bonus products that we wanted to give a shout out:

The Smart Plug: WeMo Insight Smart Plug

If you’re energy-conscious, then this highly-affordable $40 smart plug from Belkin could make a  great addition to your home. Giving you the ability to monitor a device’s energy usage and estimate how much said usage will cost, this tablet and smartphone-compatible smart plug will have you thinking differently about your plug-in devices. This smart plug can also connect to a range of smart home platforms, including Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Nest – for seamless smart home connectivity.

So which smart home device should you choose? Well, some are more of a novelty than others, so just be sure you’re going to actually use the device before buying – especially if it’s expensive!
