Top 10 Times David Tennant Was a Legend

Top 10 Times David Tennant Was a Legend

Welcome to WatchMojoUK, and today we’re recounting the most legendary moments from Scottish sensation David Tennant’s time in the spotlight. There are so many to choose from, it’s a wonder we managed to cut it down to 10, let’s get right into it - allons-y!

#10: Pretending to Be Scottish

Taking on the role of the tenth Doctor propelled Tennant into stardom. Despite usually talking in a delightful, Lothian accent, he had to put on an English accent for the entire role. This made for a hilarious moment in the second season, when he and Rose accidentally land in the Scottish moors. Guns are immediately pulled on them, and the Doctor, a Scottish actor, pretending to be an Englishman, begins pretending to be a Scotsman. Rose’s accent is much less authentic, and Tennant has to tell her she really shouldn’t be doing that. Fascinatingly, it’s not his natural accent, it’s overblown slightly for comedic effect.

#9: Hamlet

Any Tennant fan knows he adores theater work, so much so that he’s even described it as his “default way of being”. So much so that in 2008 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, and managed to land himself the lead role in Hamlet. He took Shakespeare’s most famous prince, and made him somehow even more relatable. The stage performance was phenomenal, and also featured famous actor Patrick Stewart. It was so popular, that in 2009 a television version was made, so the whole world could easily view the production. It’s truly one of his greatest displays of talent, and easily a legendary moment.

#8: NTA Special Recognition

At the 20th National Television Awards in 2015, Tennant was awarded a special recognition. It was a complete surprise to him, and he looked extremely flattered to receive the award. It involved a reel of colleagues from his career, all praising him for his talents and personality. “Broadchurch” (2013-17) co-star Olivia Colman, another incredibly skilled actress, sings his praises, saying he’s always happy onset. Other stars who got involved were Russell T Davies, Billie Piper, Catherine Tate, and Stephen Fry. Tennant’s reaction is adorable, revealing how little he expected these kind words.

#7: Signing an Old Photo of Himself

Did you know Tennant starred in the 1998 sitcom “Duck Patrol” (1998) alongside Richard Wilson, notable for his role in “Merlin” (2008-12). Well, not many people do, given how it was years before he became the Doctor. At least one person does though, and asked Tennant to sign a photo of himself from his younger, smooth-shaven era. He and co-Doctor Jodie Whittaker find it a hilarious throwback to an era most of us have completely forgotten. If you found “Broadchurch“ (2013-17) to be a bit too lighthearted, maybe give “Duck Patrol” (1998) a shot. You never know, it could be a hidden gem.

#6: “I Just Met Julie Andrews”

Way back in 2006, Tennant had just made his debut as the Doctor, and was beginning to garner a significant following. This caused him to be nominated for “Most Popular Actor” at the 12th National Television Awards in 2006. His competition was nowhere near as charming as him, so he easily won the award, presented by the legendary Dame Julie Andrews. It seems he wasn’t as phased by the award as much as he was by Andrews kissing him on the cheek. Instead of talking about the award, he spent a moment being starstruck by the interaction. It’s ironic, given how many of us would react the same way about meeting Tennant.

#5: Cancer Research Ambassador

It’s well known that Tennant loves charity work, using his stardom to bring attention to important issues in society. Not only is he a patron of International Cancer Research, but he also once became the ambassador for World Wide Cancer Research. Unfortunately, his mother tragically passed away from cancer in 2007, but his activism has undoubtedly helped others avoid similar fates. That’s not the end of his activism though, he was also named greenest celebrity in 2008. Additionally, he’s worked closely with Headway Essex, a charity dedicated to caring for individuals with head injuries.

#4: Sexiest Man in the Universe

Tennant is regularly featured at the top of lists ranking attractive men. Radio Times named him “Coolest Man on TV” in 2007, and he won “Most Popular Actor” at the National Television Awards in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010. Cosmopolitan readers also voted him the 16th Sexiest Man in the World in 2008, but his most legendary award for attractiveness came from LGBT+ newspaper, the Pink Paper. He was voted the “Sexiest Man in the Universe”. This is a bold title to give out, but who else deserves it other than Tennant?

#3: Reprising His Role as The Doctor

Tennant played the Tenth Doctor from 2005 until 2010, when he was replaced by Matt Smith. Many thought this was the end of Tennant’s iconic role, but 14 years later, in 2022, he came back to the character. This moment was amazing, and it had fans worldwide beyond excited to see him come back. Whether you liked the three specials or not, everyone agreed, it felt damn good to see him and Tate back as the Doctor and Donna. It was only short-lived, but after the decline in popularity the series had seen, it was completely needed to revitalize the show, which it did excellently.

#2: Human Rights Support

Tennant has been a vocal supporter of human rights causes throughout his career, taking advantage of his platform to advocate for humanitarian issues. He showed support for “The Most Important Thing”, a UN Refugee Agency campaign to garner support for refugees. He also appeared in a TV and radio campaign to provide support for Ukrainian refugees. He’s worked extensively with both Comic Relief and Red Nose Day for years, and supported the #ItsNotOkay campaign in 2017. He’s also worked with Amnesty International, and even wrote an introduction to their book “We Are All Born Free”, an illustrated version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, made for children.

#1: LGBT+ Activism

If you thought he couldn’t get anymore legendary, just wait till you hear about his support for the LGBT+ cause. He and his wife regularly wear pins in support of trans and non-binary rights, and one of his children is even non-binary. He even received the LGBT+ Celebrity Ally award at the 2024 British LGBT Awards. Tennant admirably disagreed with the award, saying everyone has the right to “live their life how they wanna live it”, and we shouldn't be giving awards for basic human decency. In his acceptance speech, he also hilariously criticized Kemi Badenoch for her malicious views on trans rights, and opposition to human decency. Naturally, this outraged far-right ideologists, but it earned him even more love from the rest of us.
