For this list, we're looking at the lesser-known (but just as brilliant) performances from Daniel Craig's back-catalogue, not including small supporting or cameo roles. While he's world famous for playing James Bond, and he has starred in international blockbusters – including “Logan Lucky”, “Munich” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” – these are the films that you might've missed.

#5: “The Trench” (1999)
Craig’s no stranger to intense action movies nowadays, but this World War One film was one of his first. “The Trench” sees Craig play the battle-hardened Sergeant Winter, who leads his platoon into the Battle of the Somme. Winter’s a straight-talking sort and a frontline veteran, but even he can’t prepare for the horror of what’s to come. The cast is crammed with recognisable faces, too – from Cillian Murphy to Danny Dyer. And if you’re looking for more war films with Craig front and centre, how about the 2008 revenge drama, “Defiance”? In it, Craig plays a Jewish victim of the Nazi regime, who sets out to avenge his parents’ deaths.
#4: “Love and Rage” (1998)
To another intense role, but a very different setting. We’re in 19th century Ireland for this film, which sees Craig star opposite Greta Scacchi, for a story centred on a scandalous affair. Scacchi’s Agnes MacDonnell is a wealthy and independent divorcee who proudly defies how society says a woman should act. And in keeping with her risqué reputation, Agnes begins a steamy relationship with a worker from her estate – enter Daniel Craig. But the fun gradually evaporates, as Craig’s character becomes obsessive, intrusive and increasingly scary.
#3: “Hotel Splendide” (2000)
To a dark indie comedy, and one of Craig’s most unexpected roles. He plays one of the Blanche family – who inherit a remote and dilapidated health resort. Following the death of Dame Blanche, the matriarchal family leader, the hotel seems headed for ruin – until Toni Colette arrives to revamp the menu, and rekindle a romance with Craig. And there’s a satisfying link for Bond fans, too. In Craig’s first Bond flick, “Casino Royale”, he stays with Vesper Lynd at another Hotel Splendide, in Montenegro. And that’s a five-star fact.
#2: “Some Voices” (2000)
Starring as a schizophrenic patient who struggles to readjust to daily life, Craig takes on a complex role for this film. He plays Ray, who appears to be on an upward curve, with the voices in his head managed by medication. Craig’s character stays with his brother Pete (played by David Morrissey) and soon develops a relationship with Laura, who’s played by Kelly Macdonald. But when Ray tries to wean himself off his meds, problems begin to emerge. The movie was lauded for avoiding tired clichés on mental health, while Craig’s acting also had critics cooing.

Away from his blockbuster roles, Craig has consistently proven his versatility – and unconventional romances are quite a specialist subject. We might’ve listed the 1997 Franco-German drama “Obsession” on today’s list – where Craig plays one corner of an impassioned love triangle – but “The Mother” takes top spot. It sees Craig play handyman Darren, who has an affair with a recently-widowed grandmother, played by Anne Reid. Oh, and he’s also romantically involved with Anne Reid’s daughter. The Brit film lacks the commercial clout of some of Craig’s other movies, but it was the toast of award shows in 2004. And for good reason.
