#5: Shane MacGowan
Born in 1957
Best known as the lead writer and singer for the Irish punk band The Pogues, Shane MacGowan was actually born in Kent and spent his childhood between Ireland and the UK. Also a member of The Nipple Erectors and The Popes, and boasting several solo records, MacGowan is notorious for his public struggles with substance abuse and his infamous dental difficulties. Though sidelined since he fractured his pelvis in 2015, an injury which left him wheelchair-bound, his records are still revered - especially at Christmas.
#4: Alastair Cook
Born in 1984
Debuting for the English cricket team at the age of only 21, Alastair Cook carved out a record-breaking career as one of the best top order batsmen in the country. Having captained both the Test and One Day International teams, Cook became the most capped England player in October 2016, and he was the youngest English test cricketer to reach 11,000 runs. The highlight of his career probably came during the 2013 Ashes series however, when he masterminded a 3-0 win for England, to ensure a third straight victory against Australia.

Born in 1957
A player, a manager, a presenter and an analyst, Chris Kamara is one of English football’s most well-known personalities. In a playing career which ran from 1974 to 1995, Kamara represented several teams including Portsmouth, Brentford and Swindon Town amongst others, before becoming a manager for both Bradford and Stoke City. However, he left the dugout behind in the late ‘90s to become a leading correspondent for Sky Sports, where he has developed a trademark and hilarious style. Football’s always that little bit better when Kammy’s around.

Famed for her work with Eurythmics and as a solo artist, this Scottish musician has been recording since the 1970s, and is still going strong. Annie Lennox has sold over 80 million records, had number one hits all over the world, and she has four Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Oscar to her name. Not bad, eh! Though she continues to tour the planet with her brilliant back-catalogue, Lennox also makes use of her fame as a prominent activist for AIDS awareness and LGBT rights. In short, she’s a living legend.
#1: Sir Isaac Newton
Born in 1642
Regarded in his lifetime as a ‘natural philosopher’, Isaac Newton is easily one of the most influential scientists of all time. With his discoveries of the laws of motion and gravity, Newton was able to scientifically confirm that the Earth revolved around the sun, as well as accurately predict its shape. He was also a key pioneer in optics, building the first reflecting telescope in the 1660s, as well as co-developing the study of calculus. There aren’t many Brits who’ve had a bigger impact on history than this guy.
