Referees make mistakes, but nobody expected a referee to mistake two people who look completely different, and thus penalise the wrong person in a game that was already going bad.

It's not necessarily the fact that he did it, it's the fact that he got away with it. Actually, scrap that. The fact that he had the audacity to do it, and got away with it, shocked England and perhaps shocked modern football. Only one other handball shocked the world more (Suarez)

Take two good teams, an important game and a card-happy referee. What have you got? A disturbing game of football where nasty tackles, foul play and frankly outstanding behaviour shocked the world. Still, at least one of them got a goal in.
