Most of the heavy-hitting brutes in the original were villains (closest thing the heroes had was Cyborg). Swamp Thing would give them one of their own.

Not just because he's a great character, but because the Lazarus Pits would allow for those killed off in the original (Lex Luthor, Shazam, Green Arrow, etc.) to be re-included.
