He eventually joined the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and rose through its ranks over a series of years. He then seized power, and ran Iraq under a dictatorship for decades. While he did improve some aspects of Iraqi life, his thirst for power in the Middle East was the cause of wars and destruction.
