Top 10 Sci-Fi Movie Duels

Sometimes the best fights are fought mono a mono. Welcome to and today we’ll be counting down the top 10 sci-fi movie duels.

Just to avoid confusion, our list includes showdowns involving two opponents that are similarly matched. We’re dispensing with the traditional honor-bound, arranged meeting aspect of definition of a duel, and will be omitting superhero flicks.

#10- Arthur Vs Mental Projection “Inception” (2010)

Kicking off our list is this breathtaking fight between Joseph Gordon Levitt and an aggressive projection during a mind heist. When gravity disappears, he is forced to defend himself with hand to hand. Incredibly, this fight did not make use of CGI, but took place on a rotating set that twisted and turned 360 degrees, and took over three weeks to film. Why can’t Star Trek or Star Wars do something like this?

#9- Nada Vs. Frank “They Live” (1988)

Wrestlers and Sci-fi are always a match made in heaven. Here, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper picks a fight with his friend after he refuses to put on his sunglasses. No joke, that’s the deal. Of course, these are special sunglasses that allow the wearer to see the Aliens among us, but he’s not having it. This fight doesn’t contain any zero-g or lasers, but is one of the most the most realistic, grueling and drawn out fights to involve two ordinary Joes. Seriously they fight for a long time.

#8- Robocop Vs ED209 “Robocop” (1987)

When Robocop discovers that OCP is running a racket between Detroit’s police and a major gang, he attempts to arrest the corrupt executive who’s responsible. His progress is slowed when he’s stopped by his 4thPrime Directive, and he ever popular ED209. This prompts some sweet robot on robot action. While the outgunned Robotcop takes a severe beating, he luckily discovers his opponent’s greatest weakness: stairs…

#7- Kirk Vs Khan “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” (1982)

A unique duel on our list, this one features opponents that never meet face to face (at least not in the Movie). Instead, it involves Kirk and his greatest enemy in a battle of wits. With equally matched Federation ships, their starship duel goes back and forth as both suffer substantial loses throughout. Finally luring Khan into the Mutara Nebula, the two starships continue to battle blind before Kirk edges out a victory.

#6- Optimus Prime Vs Megatron “Transformers: The Movie” (1986)

If there was one giant robot fight to rule them all, it’s this one. Not one kid left the theatre with dry pants after seeing Optimus Prime battle Megatron for the last time. An evenly matched fight, it was pure good versus evil. From a fistfight to laser cannons and an energy blade, it all comes down to Optimus hesitating to finish the job, Megatron regaining the upper hand, and the two titans finally meeting their end together. Sure they fought again in Michael Bay’s films, but it just wasn’t the same…

#5- Neo Vs Agent Smith “The Matrix”

No one has ever fought an agent and survived until now. This is the fight in which Neo finally began to embrace his destiny as the one, and was thus able match speed and skill with his arch nemesis in a subway station. Starting off like a western complete with urban tumbleweed, they fire off every remaining bullet before their resorting to Kung Fu. Smith almost ends it all with a headlock, but Neo get’s the jump on him at the last second.

#4- Dutch Vs Predator “Predator” (1987)

In this confrontation, it’s Arnie as the last man standing versus an alien hunter with superior technology. The two most dangerous warriors from two different planets, Arnie shows that he’s not just brawn, but brains as well as he uses mud to conceal his body heat and creates impromptu weapons and traps. Ultimately, he uses the predator’s thermal vision against him and their grueling fight takes several twists before Arnie comes out on top and the Predator tries to rage quit.

#3- Luke Vs Vader “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”

Though Luke didn’t know it at the time, this was in fact the greatest father and son fight ever recorded. A light saber duel, it first consisted of Vader testing Luke and leading him toward a freezing chamber. Defying expectations, Luke proved that Light Jedi’s can jump! Though Luke temporarily held his own, his defiance sure caused Vader to throw a shit storm and disarm him with the truth.

#2- Ripley Vs The Alien Queen “Aliens” (1986)

This iconic confrontation sees the alien Queen stow away onboard Ripley’s ship after we all thought it was all over. Caught of guard, Ripley lets loose her motherly instincts when Newt is threatened. She does this by making use of a balls-out-awesome power-loader, in order to engage the massive Xeno in Sci-fi’s greatest catfight- complete with neck squeezing, a welding torch and an airlock!

#1- Terminator Vs T-1000 “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991)

Terminating our list is the battle between the T-800 and the nearly indestructible liquid metal T-1000. A fight for the survival of the human race, Arnie’s Terminator gives it his all and takes one hell of a beating. But, proving that you can’t be the classic models, his t-800 pulls an energizer buddy and keeps going and going. A carefully timed grenade over a smelting pit clenches the victory and dissolves his opponent’s chances.
