#5: It Was Ellen Who Gave Him His 1st Record Deal

Yes, that one. After seeing a video of Puth and friend Emily Luther performing a cover version of Adele’s “Someone like You” on YouTube, daytime TV host and all-around awesome human being Ellen DeGeneres invited them to be guests on her show. It was there that she announced that both of them would be the newest members of her recently debuted record label eleveneleven, which already included artists such as Greyson Chance and Jessica Simpson. While Puth would ultimately sign with Atlantic Records in 2015, Ellen’s contribution to his burgeoning music career cannot be overstated.

#4: He Graduated from Berklee College of Music

Charlie Puth has dedicated his entire life to becoming a musician. His mother immediately recognized his talent and had him learning the piano at age 4 and studying jazz before his eleventh birthday. In fact, because of his obsession with music he was often the target of bullying by his classmates. All that changed when he enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College and later, the prestigious Berklee College of Music. The school, which boasts Quincy Jones, Diana Krall and Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford as members of its alumni, is one of the most respected music institutions in the world.

#3: He Won a Contest Sponsored by Perez Hilton

Long before his songs were cracking the Billboard Hot 100 and earning him Grammy nominations, Charlie Puth was just another musician looking for his big break. Thankfully for him, and ears the world over, he didn’t have to wait long. Puth and Emily Luther’s aforementioned Adele cover song was strong enough to win the “Can You Sing?” competition in 2011. Sponsored by blogger and TV personality Perez Hilton, the competition catapulted Puth into the public consciousness and in the span of less than a year he was performing on the Ellen DeGeneres show and signed to her label. Not bad for a kid from New Jersey!

#2: He Wrote Jingles on YouTube

We all need to start somewhere. For Charlie Puth, that somewhere was YouTube. Like many of today’s young stars, Puth began uploading videos to the site in the hopes of being discovered. He started his own channel in 2009 and soon found himself inundated with subscribers. The reason? His channel was loaded with awesome acoustic cover songs and videos of him goofing around. In fact, Puth became such an integral part of the YouTube community that he began writing jingles for the vlogs and podcasts of other personalities of the video sharing site. With over 8.7 million subscribers and counting as of November 2017, Puth’s YouTube channel is as hot as ever!

#1: He Got His Scar from a Dog Attack

One of the first things you notice when you look at Puth is the distinct slice through his right eyebrow. Though it may look like a fashion statement, the truth is that he got the scar after a dog attacked him when he was just two years old.The attack was so vicious he suffered severe head trauma and reportedly almost died as a result. Though he thankfully recovered, his eyebrow serves as a permanent reminder. Of course, once he made it big, it didn’t take long for his fans.
