Top 10 Extremely Stupid British Royal Family Moments

Even royalty make mistakes from time to time. Welcome to WatchMojoUK, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Extremely Stupid British Royal Family Moments.

For this list, we’re taking a look at the worst gaffes, blunders and slip-ups committed by members of the British royal family.

#10: The Racist Brooch

In 2017, Princess Michael of Kent attended a Christmas banquet at Buckingham Palace, as one of many guests including Prince Harry’s then-fiancée Meghan Markle. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be front page news. However, Princess Michael showed up to the event wearing a blackamoor brooch. This particular piece of jewellery, which depicts an African man in traditional clothing, was popular back in the 18th century… but today is considered dated, and more appropriately, racist. Understandably, the Princess drew considerable flack for her fashion faux pas and later apologised for her insensitive decision to wear the brooch.

#9: Markle vs. Middleton

Reports that the newly inducted Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle and her royal sister-in-law Kate Middleton don’t get along have been swirling ever since their first encounter. And, while many have attempted to debunk these suggestions, they continue to rear their ugly heads. From petty arguments about not being invited to certain events, to a bridesmaid dress fitting that reportedly ended in tears, the rumour mill has been working overtime ever since Meghan arrived on the scene. The “extremely stupid” aspect of this story is really the story itself, as it simply refuses to go away.

#8: Charles Fluffs his Lines

Shortly after their engagement in the winter of 1981, Prince Charles and Diana Spencer gave a now-infamous joint interview. Diana, who was 12 years Charles’ junior, appeared poised. Prince Charles, on the other hand, looked like he’d have rather been someplace else. This became wholly apparent when the couple was asked the obvious question… if they were in love? Lady Di gave the expected response when she said, “Of course.” And then Charles added, “whatever ‘in love’ means.” Yikes. The line gave credence to the idea that the Prince wasn’t exactly thrilled to be marrying Diana, which is hardly what you want to convey to the public months before a royal wedding!

#7: Prince Philip Makes Racist Remarks in China

Few members of the royal family have been embroiled in as many social and political blunders as this one. In fact, Prince Philip’s unofficial moniker amongst the media is the “Prince of Gaffes”. He earned the nickname thanks in part to moments like this, which occurred during a royal visit to China in the mid-80s. Prince Philip infamously told British students studying in Beijing, “If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed." He went on to call the Chinese capital “ghastly”, and later joked that the Cantonese will eat just about anything.

#6: Sarah Ferguson Gets Busted

Fergie, as she is often referred to, is no stranger to scandal. However, perhaps her most damning moment came in 2010, when she was busted for trying to sell access to an undercover reporter. Ferguson demanded that the reporter, who was posing as a rich businessman, pay her £500,000. In return she’d provide him with unprecedented access to her ex-husband, Prince Andrew. To make matters worse the entire thing was caught on camera, with clear footage of Fergie saying, “Look after me and he'll look after you ... you'll get it back tenfold." If that’s not a smoking gun, we don’t know what is.

#5: The Affair

Arguably the most famous love triangle in the history of the monarchy, Prince Charles’ affair with his long-time consort Camilla Parker-Bowles ultimately proved too much for Lady Di to handle. It was no secret that Charles’ heart belonged to Camilla. The two had been close prior to his marriage to Diana, and they remained that way after the couple said, “I do.” In fact, when Diana was asked if Parker Bowles’ presence played a role in her decision to get a divorce, she replied by calling her marriage “crowded” referring to the fact that it was shared by “three” people. This was not the first royal affair, but it was definitely the most notorious.

#4: Prince Philip’s Car Accident

As previously noted, Prince Philip is no stranger to public missteps. However, this one definitely takes the cake. The oldest male member of the royal family was involved in a car accident in early 2019. The 97-year old flipped his Land Rover while driving in Norfolk, just outside of the Queen’s Sandringham estate. Philip walked away unharmed, but the passengers of the other vehicle required hospital treatment – and the incident sparked public debate on whether the Prince was too old to drive in the first place. While some held out hope that he’d see the error of his ways and hang up his car keys for good, he was photographed behind the wheel just two days later – this time without a seatbelt! Some people never learn.

#3: The Delayed Response

In the days following Princess Diana’s tragic death the Royal Family were unsurprisingly under intense media scrutiny. The watching millions waited for them to respond. And waited. And waited. However, instead of addressing a nation in mourning, the Queen, Prince Charles and everyone else stayed hidden at Balmoral Castle. And, when they finally emerged, it was too little too late. According to the family, they’d stayed away in a bid to protect Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry. But, the excuse fell short with a lot of the public, much of the press turned on the monarchy, and there followed a period where the Palace’s public approval reached all new lows.

#2: The Sarah Ferguson Toe Sucking Scandal

Some members of the royal family just can’t seem to keep from putting their foot in their mouth. Although in this particular case, it was someone else’s mouth. In 1992, the tabloids published a picture of Sarah Ferguson getting her toes sucked while on vacation in France. The man on the other end was her financial advisor John Bryan. It all proved extremely embarrassing for Fergie and the royal family, as the photos were published just six months after her separation from her former husband Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Suffice to say, the Queen was not happy!

#1: Prince Harry’s Poor Costume Choice

To the royalist of ‘royal cock-ups’, and an image that almost defied belief when it was first published, back in 2005. Here we have a young Prince Harry photographed wearing a swastika armband while attending a “colonials and natives” fancy dress party. With a theme like that, the racial insensitivity was seemingly inevitable… but Harry’s costume choice took it to a whole new level. The photo was front page news, and Harry was forced to issue a prompt and sincere apology. One might expect a member of the Royal Family to have a little more decorum. But, apparently not.
