Conspiracy theorists will turn ANYTHING into a conspiracy! For this list, we'll be looking at historical events that, through complex mental gymnastics, conspiracy theorists have linked to the Illuminati, a secret society in Bavaria, Germany, in the late 18th century. Mind you, ONE of these is actually true! The Illuminati DID have a convention in 1782. Our countdown also includes The Watergate Scandal, John F. Kennedy's Assassination, The Death of Paul Walker, and more! Had you heard about any of these theories? Do you believe them? In that case, we have a bridge to sell you! Let us know in the comments below!

10 Events That Have Been Linked to the Illuminati

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re examining 10 Events That Have Been Linked to the Illuminati.

For this list, we’ll be looking at shocking occurrences that have been the subject of many conspiracy theories; some involving the supposed secret society. To be clear, while the historical Bavarian Illuminati briefly existed in the 1700s, modern conspiracies regarding the Illuminati and a New World Order are not to be taken seriously.

Had you heard about any of these theories? Let us know in the comments below!

The Watergate Scandal

Chances are that the Illuminati will be name-dropped in some capacity whenever politics is concerned. Case in point - the infamous Watergate scandal. In 1972, burglars associated with Richard Nixon broke into the Watergate complex, which housed the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. Following a highly publicized investigation, Nixon was found responsible for concealing the ordeal and resigned rather than face impeachment proceedings. LimeWire founder Mark Gorton allegedly once claimed that Nixon was framed by a “secret cabal” with ulterior motives. That sounds an awful lot like what conspiracy theorists make the Illuminati out to be, doesn’t it?

The Battle of Waterloo

Fought on June 18, 1815, the Battle of Waterloo was a significant turning point in the War of the Seventh Coalition. And by that, we mean it put an end to the Napoleonic Wars. Over 70,000 French soldiers battled roughly 120,000 of the Coalition’s, with the latter side emerging victorious after fierce fighting. The loss put an end to Napoleon’s campaign, collapsed the First French Empire, and would help lead to the peaceful period known as Pax Britannica. Of course, some believe that the so-called Illuminati was responsible for the Battle of Waterloo and its history-altering outcome. To what end is anyone’s guess, but those who believe in the Illuminati often link them to events that have major repercussions.

The Death of Paul Walker

American actor Paul Walker became a household name playing Brian O'Conner in the “Fast & Furious” movies. He starred in six of the first seven films, with “Furious 7” serving as a posthumous release. Walker sadly passed away on November 30, 2013. He was traveling in a Porsche Carrera GT with driver Roger Rodas when they were involved in a deadly crash. Of course, some don’t accept this story and believe that the Illuminati are to blame. According to one conspiracy theory, the Illuminati had Walker killed with a drone strike after he discovered some sensitive information.

The French Revolution

If the conspiracies are to be believed, the Illuminati are quite closely involved with French politics. Perhaps one of the most notable events in world history, the French Revolution spanned from 1789 to 1799. Its outcomes were numerous, including the death of Louis XVI, the dismantling of the Old Regime, and the birth of constitutional monarchy. Responsibility was almost immediately placed on the Illuminati. Yes, the conspiracy theories go back that far. French Jesuit priest Augustin Barruel blamed the Illuminati, among others, for the French Revolution in his seminal book “Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism.”

The Election of Thomas Jefferson

Conspiracy theories claiming the Illuminati allegedly have ties to American politics have been present from the beginning. Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States, serving two terms from 1801 to 1809. Now, allegations involving the Illuminati were widespread following the publication of Augustin Barruel’s aforementioned book. Yale University president, Timothy Dwight, along with other prominent figures, accused Jefferson of working with the society around 1798. They hoped that this would hurt his chances of becoming President. However, the plan reportedly backfired, with preacher John C. Ogden accusing Dwight and his associates of being the real members of the Illuminati. Jefferson was elected President, and America had a new conspiracy theory to obsess over.

Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift

Yep, even the infamous Kanye West-Taylor Swift incident has been linked to the Illuminati. For those unaware, West stormed the stage while Swift was accepting a VMA and grabbed the mic. He then proceeded to voice his opinion that Beyoncé should have won. West was booed off the stage and reportedly even kicked out of the event. According to the conspiracy theory, this event was staged by the Illuminati to humiliate Swift as a form of recruitment. The society was supposedly testing her character under great stress and humiliation. Needless to say, this one’s pretty out there.

John F. Kennedy’s Assassination

Conspiracies often range from completely bonkers to somewhat believable. Many people believe that the ones surrounding the JFK assassination belong to the latter. President Kennedy was killed by a man named Lee Harvey Oswald, but certain Americans aren’t convinced. In fact, most of them believe in some type of conspiracy. And for some, that conspiracy may involve the so-called Illuminati. As the story goes, Kennedy was allegedly planning on enacting certain things that went against the Illuminati’s interests, like ending the Vietnam War or even exposing them. To prevent this, they allegedly eliminated him. Oswald claimed that he was a fall guy prior to being charged, and if you buy into this conspiracy, there may be some truth in that.

The Moon Landing

It’s one of the greatest accomplishments in human history; on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The work and intelligence that went into this accomplishment is simply extraordinary, and it was deemed the stuff of science fiction just years before. But some don’t buy it, with a portion of Americans believing that it was faked. In fact, some assume that movie director Stanley Kubrick was involved in the shooting of the footage, as he did such a good job depicting space in “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Some may even claim that the so-called Illuminati was involved, but what their goal was in supposedly producing a faked moon landing, we may never know…

The Convent of Wilhelmsbad

Amid all these insane conspiracy theories, it’s hard to believe that the Illuminati was actually real once! The Bavarian Illuminati was formed back in 1776 and hoped to free general society from the constraints of religion and state. Naturally, they were banned. But before that occurred, they attempted to grow at something called the Convent of Wilhelmsbad. In 1782, various delegates from secret societies met in Wilhelmsbad, Germany. They discussed mysticism and potential alliances between orders, but the concrete results were arguably few and unimportant. Still, a meeting of this caliber is fascinating to ponder, and it generates all the visuals we think of when we hear about “secret societies.”

September 11 2001 Tragedy

With each new tragedy come fresh conspiracy theories, and unfortunately 9/11 is no different. Some believe that the country’s leaders knew about the attack, while others claim that the buildings were demolished with the use of planted explosives. These beliefs make up the so-called “Truth movement.” Certain conspiracy theorists think that the Illuminati were behind the whole thing, while others posit that Osama bin Laden was a member. According to the conspiracy, the Illuminati allegedly had ambitions, including a New World Order and an invasion of the Middle East. They would’ve supposedly carried out this awful attack in a bid to make those plans reality.
