In a change of pace for the Call of Juarez series, The Cartel has been developed from the ground up as a co-op centered first person shooter. This means that the campaign supports all of the characters simultaneously in three-player online play. The most defining feature of this change is the series’ new flanking system. This requires you to work with your allies, and have teammates provide cover fire in order to gain ground in enemy territories.

With its new co-op centric gameplay, players will have to work together to complete missions. However, The Cartel spices up the formula by having each character carry their own secret agenda that they must complete along the way. These are centered on schemes to steal drug money, and as an agent of the law, you must achieve your goals without getting caught by your fellow officials. Getting spotted by your teammates will result in the loss of your big payday that you’re gunning for on the side. In single-player mode, computer AI controls your companions. Because of this, they will not attempt side objectives. Instead, they will only try and catch you while you attempt to complete yours.

With its focus on 12-player team gameplay, The Cartel’s multiplayer mode brings a lot to the table. Here, players will compete through 18 massive maps in objective-based modes. These pit teams of cops and robbers against each other in a gangland-style war for control of cocaine. In these modes, robbers must not only find and capture the drugs, but make their way back to their own base with a truck, capture the snitch from police custody and destroy evidence.

Keeping with the B-Movie feel of past installments, this third entry not only shifts into a modern setting, but also presents a much darker theme that pushes a mature rating. This means that the franchise will now feature elements such as adult language, drugs and nudity.
