#5: It’s Practically Made for Bridgerton Fans

Calling all Regency era super fans! Your time for all the good media has finally arrived. The early 2000s may have given us “Pride & Prejudice.” But the 2020s are giving so much more. “Bridgerton” was an absolute smash hit on Netflix, and the people have spoken, we want more! Well director Emma Holly Jones is here to deliver. We hope to see the same longing looks, lavish balls, and compelling characters that made “Bridgerton” such a captivating binge. There will undoubtedly be high-society style drama, romance, friendship, and revenge. Most importantly, the upcoming movie is sure to satisfy fans' desires for a hot, diverse cast in period piece clothing.

#4: The Movie Is Based on a Novel

In 2009, historical rom-com author Suzanne Allain self-published her novel, “Mr. Malcolm’s List.” And while many praised her for bringing a modern day “Jane Austen”-esque novel into the market, not all the reviews were positive. Still, the author went ahead and wrote a screenplay, which got a Black List table read and ultimately led to the story gaining much more traction. In 2020, Penguin Publishing Group’s Berkley imprint re-published the work, introducing a whole new generation of people to the period piece. Book-to-screen adaptations can be controversial, so we’re excited to see how faithful the feature film will be to its source material – and how people will respond.

#3: The Novel Was Made Into a Short Film

Director Emma Holly Jones first heard the screenplay adaptation of the story through The Black List. The creative loves period dramas, and jumped at the chance to bring this story to life. But this project was Jones’ first feature film, and she had to raise money before being able to start production. She did so in the most enticing way possible, by making a brief “prequel” of sorts to the movie. The short was produced by Refinery29 and featured in their “Shatterbox” series, with the final product being about 10 minutes long. Luckily for fans of the short, some of the cast members stuck around for the feature film.

#2: It’s a Period Drama

The story is set in Regency era 1800s London. It follows Mr. Malcolm, who’s searching for a wife, but has a stringent list of demands he needs her to meet. But we also go on a journey with the woman he turns down, named Julia, and Selina, the friend she hopes will help her get even. Like many other period pieces, this drama is centered around a love story. But “Mr. Malcolm’s List” notably sets itself apart by embracing diverse casting. Many of the actors have expressed excitement about being able to represent themselves and their cultures in realms where they weren’t previously seen. We’re stoked to get to see them all live out our period drama dreams on the big screen!

#1: It Has an A-List Cast

Emma Holly Jones went all out to make an intriguing short film, with the amazing cast featuring Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù and Freida Pinto in the starring roles of Mr. Malcolm and Selina, respectively. Indeed, both stars stayed on for the feature, playing their characters once more. Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who was in the short, is also set to appear in the movie. But casting the crucial role of Julia wasn’t as simple. While there were initially reports that Gemma Chan may reprise her role from the short, that didn’t pan out. Constance Wu was cast, but that also fell through, and Zawe Ashton ultimately became Julia. The film is also notably set to feature Ashley Park and Theo James. We’re counting down the days to the premiere!
