#3: Ryan Renolds’ “Detective Pikachu” Gets 2019 Theatrical Release

Nope, you heard right. Ryan Reynolds – yes, Deadpool Ryan Reynolds – will be all decked out in yellow come 2019, as he’s playing Pokemon’s iconic Pikachu in Detective Pikachu. The story will follow Ryan Reynolds’ Detective Pikachu, as he helps a young boy find his missing father. The live-action movie is being produced by Legendary Pictures, who have unveiled a release date of May 10, 2019. Joining Reynolds in the Pokemon film are Paper Towns and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s Justice Smith, and Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton, the latter of which is slated to play a journalist who accompanies the two on their adventure. Goosebumps’ Rob Letterman is also set to direct. According to sources close to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds’ role is said to be “motion-capture in nature.” So, no costume.

#2: The Golden Globe Nominations: Snubs and Surprises

Monday morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press announced the nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards, and with it came some surprises and snubs. Leading the ceremony in award nominations is Guillermo Del Toro’s fantasy film, The Shape of Water, with seven, and just behind him are Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, both with six. The snubs, however, may have taken precedence over the nominations, with the biggest being both Greta Gerwig’s and Jordan Peele’s absence from the Best Director category for their films Lady Bird, and Get Out, with both films sporting a stellar 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. But, when there are snubs there are surprises. One of them being Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, which rebounded from the Kevin Spacey controversy to pick up three nominations; best supporting actor for Christopher Plummer, who replaced Spacey, best actress for Michelle Williams and best director.

#1: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” to Earn $425 Million-Plus Opening Weekend

Looks like the force is strong in this sequel. According to industry trackers, Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is set to make at least $425 million dollars the world over on opening weekend alone, and that’s not including China, where the movie doesn’t hit the big screen until January 5th. If the estimates are correct, then The Last Jedi will become the fourth-largest domestic opener of all time, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and The Avengers. If it does in fact hit $425 million globally, it would earn the honor of becoming the fifth highest grossing opening behind Fate of the Furious, The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The Force Awakens opens tonight, December 14.
