Most Anticipated Games for July
It’s Summertime baby, so lets stay home and play video games. Welcome to MojoPlays and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Most Anticipated Games of July 2018.
For this list, we’re taking a look at games to look out for in the month of July, admittedly July is a slow month for video games hence why we only have 5, but here’s a tip: keep an eye on those Summer Sales for games you might have missed.
#5: “Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker”
Release Date: July 13, 2018
In the “Mario” franchise, Toads are primarily known for telling the Italian plumber that the princess is in another castle. Captain Toad stands out from his fellow mushroom people, however, quenching his thirst for adventure by solving puzzles and collecting treasures. Gaining more attention with his mini-game in “Super Mario 3D World,” Captain Toad scored his own spinoff game on the Wii U one year later. For anyone who missed this acclaimed puzzle game back in 2014, you can catch up with the ports on Nintendo Switch and 3DS. To sweeten the deal, these versions will include levels modeled after “Super Mario Odyssey,” plus two-player co-op for the Switch.
#4: “Sonic Mania Plus”
Release Date: July 17, 2018
With “Sonic Mania,” publisher Sega finally seemed to learn that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Going back to the blue blur’s roots, this retro throwback got it just right with the same vibrant graphics and slick gameplay that made Sonic a household name in the 90s. “Sonic Mania Plus” aims to keep the momentum going with additional playable characters like Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. This expanded version also includes remixed stages, new cutscenes, another Metal Sonic fight, and competition mode with up to four players. Collectors will be happy to know that the game will receive a physical release, or as $5 DLC if you already own the original.
#3: “Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2”
Release Date: July 24, 2018
It’s one of the many compilation sets gamers have been waiting for. While we did get the “Mega Man X Collection” back in 2006, it only contained the first six games and was severely lacking in bonus features. “The Legacy Collections,” meanwhile, will contain X1-X4 on the first set and X5-X8 on the second. On top of that, the extra content includes an X Challenge mode where the player can fend off two bosses at once. It also comes complete with a gallery of Mega Man X artwork, music, and commercials, not to mention a prequel film starring Sigma. Whether you’re a nostalgic gamer or new to the series, there’s something here for everyone.

If you think BioWare has been going downhill as if late, you may want to fill the void with “The Banner Saga” games. These tactical role-playing games were developed by Stoic, which three former BioWare employees founded. The original “Banner Saga” demonstrated the power of crowdfunding, gaining over $700,000 from backers. The game’s success amounted to a sequel, which received further praise for its stunning artwork, turn-based gameplay, and involving story. For the third and final entry in this Viking trilogy, the studio managed to raise over $200,000 more than their initial development goal, demonstrating just how passionate this franchise’s fan base has become.

From “Final Fantasy,” to “Dragon Quest,” to “Kingdom Hearts,” Square Enix has some of the greatest RPG franchises of all time under its belt. Will “Octopath Traveler” be the next in their long line of successes? As the title suggests, the player assumes control of one of eight characters, each coming complete with their own unique skill set and origin story. An exclusive for the Nintendo Switch, this game returns to the tradition of classic Super Nintendo RPGs with turn-based combat and 16-but graphics. So, if you grew up playing “Secret of Mana,” “Chrono Trigger,” and “Final Fantasy VI,” amongst others, this one should hit you right in the childhood.
