Top Anticipated Games of October 2018
Get your goody baskets because we’ve got some treats for you. Welcome to MojoPlays and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top Anticipated Games of October 2018.
There aren’t a ton of high-profile games coming out this month and you’ll understand why once we get to our inevitable top pick. That being said, October is still bringing us several titles that should definitely be on your radar. Also, we’re excluding “Forza Horizon 4,” as we already discussed the Ultimate Edition last month.
#8: “Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game”
Release Date: October 30, 2018
Cthulhu’s been around for decades, but this cosmic being’s popularity has arguably grown stronger as of late, having appeared in several movies, TV shows, and games. “Call of Cthulhu” naturally draws inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft’s 1928 short story, as well as the 1981 role-playing game. Players step into the shoes of Edward Pierce, a private investigator who draws an unlikely parallel between the murder of a family and Cthulhu’s imminent arrival. With a semi-open world, the game puts a strong emphasis on stealth, psychological horror, and detective skills. The gothic trailer calls “Resident Evil” and other bone-chilling survival horror games to mind, which is fitting since it’s coming out just in time for Halloween.
#7: “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4”
Release Dates: October 12, 2018
Considering that the pre-order sales for “Battlefield V” were reportedly 85% less than the ones for “Black Ops 4,” it’s not surprising that EA decided to push back their first-person shooter’s release date to November. While the more recent “Call of Duty” games have mostly stuck to the status quo, the latest entry will shake up the formula in a significant way, ditching the single-player campaign in favor of a battle royal mode known as Blackout. Granted, the traditional campaign’s removal has disappointed some fans and the game’s season pass has only fanned the flames of controversy. If Blackout mode pays off, though, it could give “PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds” and “Fortnite” a run for their money.
#6: “Starlink: Battle for Atlas”
Release Date: October 16, 2018
Toys-to-life games have dipped in popularity as of late, but Ubisoft is convinced that they can bring the genre back to life with “Starlink: Battle for Atlas.” In any case, the toys-to-life element is only optional for this space adventure, which tasks the player with exploring and forming alliances throughout the Atlas system. Each planet comes complete with a unique landscape, storyline, and creatures. For Nintendo fans, the Switch version will even include a Star Fox crossover. “Starklink” has been described as “Skylanders” meets “No Man’s Sky,” and while neither of those properties has a perfect track record, they were both innovative endeavors that demonstrated real potential. Will “Starlink” deliver where its predecessors fell short?
#5: “Soulcalibur VI”
Release Date: October 19, 2018
While every “Soulcalibur” game has been well-received, nothing’s ever quite topped the impact of the original masterpiece. “Soulcalibur VI” takes us back to the 16th century, allowing players to experience the first game from a new perspective and “uncover hidden truths.” While this will give the game a nostalgia factor, “Soulcalibur VI” also introduces a few new elements. The Reversal Edge mechanic, for examples, makes it easier for players to defend against looming attacks and retaliate quickly. It also wouldn’t be a “Soulcalibur” game without at least one guest character. In this case, Geralt of Rivia from “The Witcher” series is stepping through a portal to join the fight!
#4: “Super Mario Party”
Release Date: October 5, 2018
Since the Nintendo Switch’s launch in 2017, we’ve gotten a Mario kart racer, a Mario tennis game, a 3D Mario platformer, and even a Mario crossover with the Raving Rabbids. So, it was only a matter of time until we got a new “Mario Party” as well. Seeing how the long-running party series is having its 20th birthday this year, “Super Mario Party” sounds like the perfect way to celebrate. The game offers a traditional experience while also taking advantage of the Switch’s motion controls and local wireless capabilities. The new online mode will also allow players to compete against each other in all 80 mini-games, although the board game feature sadly isn’t available online.
#3: “Mega Man 11”
Release Date: October 2, 2018
Weirdly enough, this month is not only bringing us the eleventh main game in the “Mario Party” series, but also the eleventh main game in the “Mega Man” franchise. We guess this month just goes up to eleven. Yet another notable gaming anniversary, Mega Man turned 30 years old not too long ago. “Mega Man 11” thus aims to commemorate the Blue Bomber’s birthday by striking a balance of old and new. The developers remain true to the franchise’s roots with classic side-scrolling gameplay while also revisiting more modern elements like voice acting and 2.5D graphics. Assuming you’ve already powered through “Megan X Legacy Collection 1+2,” this title should more than fill the void.
#2: “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey”
Release Date: October 5, 2018
Over the past decade or so, we’ve gotten at least one new “Assassin’s Creed” title every year. Keeping up with all of these games can admittedly feel a chore at times, but “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” seems poised to remind players why we fell in love with this series in the first place. Following a fictionalized version of the Peloponnesian War during Ancient Greece, “Odyssey” of course features satisfying steal mechanics, as well as the return of naval combat and the hitbox system first seen in “Origins.” “Odyssey” also strives to evolve the franchise’s gameplay with role-playing elements and branching dialog choices that amount to different potential endings. Will you side with Athens or the Spartans?
#1: “Red Dead Redemption 2”
Release Date: October 26, 2018
If you’re still wondering why October is fairly scarce in the new release department, the credit can largely be attributed to “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Rockstar’s long-awaited sequel to their 2010 western hit is by far the most anticipated game of the year – and its competitors are aware of this. Honestly, we’d probably be satisfied if “Red Dead Redemption 2” was the only new game coming out this month… assuming it can live up to the astronomical hype. Given Rockstar’s reputation, however, there’s little doubt that the studio will deliver a stunning open world, a gripping story, and hours of addictive gameplay. In any case, it’s already expected to be the best-selling game of 2018.
