#10: "De Stijl" (2000) The White Stripes
Rocking Through the '80s: Top 10 Albums
Released before The White Stripes became internationally popular, De Stijl was one of the year's bestrock albums. While it didn’t receive the commercial success that the band’s later albums would, their second studio album still featured the signature White Stripes sound and all the bluesy greatness that comes with it. It has since become a cult favorite of the band's fans, especially for the way the band seamlessly fused punk and blues rock together into a terrific rock package. With playful drums from Meg White and hard hitting guitars coming from frontman Jack White, De Stijl gave rock fans what they really wanted back in 2000.
#9: "Parachutes" (2000) Coldplay
The debut album from the now worldwide phenomenon Coldplay, Parachutes launched the alternative rock band into enormous mainstream success. Featuring hit singles, including "Yellow," Parachutes went platinum 8 times in the band’s home turf of the U.K as well as double platinum in both Canada and the U.S. The album’s critical success was just as impressive, with most of the praise coming from comparisons to fellow U.K alt rock group Radiohead. A band that is not to be criticized for a lack of experimentation, Deftones released a masterpiece with White Pony. Many fans and critics alike hail this album as a mature turning point for the band, citing experimentation in their music rather than adhering to their previous nu-metal sound. The experiment was a success, and the album became their highest-selling and was critically acclaimed, including a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their single "Elite." Incorporating sounds from various genres such as new wave and shoegaze, the album’s diversity landed it on many year end lists from such publications as Alternative Press and Kerrang.

The breakthrough album for this California rock band, Rated R may not have been straight up rock, but it was a fantastic album with some unique vocals and music. While this kind of music may seem familiar today, in 2000 it was Linkin Park that perfected the sound and brought it to mainstream audiences. The band's debut, it was an immediate success, and has since been honored as the highest-selling debut album of the 21st century, selling nearly thirty million copies. With their signature booming hard rock and unique blending of rapping and singing, Linkin Park had a hit sound on their hands. Featuring timeless singles that are still played on rock stations today, it's safe to say that they came out of the gate running.

After some questionable material throughout the 90s, U2 returned with a bang with this critically acclaimed album, selling over twelve million copies and winning seven Grammy Awards. A return to their signature rock sound, Bono claimed that they were "reapplying for the job of best band in the world," and his statement certainly held true.

While Modest Mouse is finally enjoying some radio play in 2015, they were still critically adored fifteen years ago and releasing some of their best material. Showcasing some serious experimentation from the Washington indie rock band, the band incorporated instruments such as violin on more ambitious tracks, while maintaining their original sound on others. And if that doesn’t keep you coming back for more, then frontman Isaac Brock’s vocals sure will.

While "Ms. Jackson" and “B.O.B” may be singles that people around the world love to sing along to, the album rest of Stankonia featured some dense and serious topics, helping the duo amass critical acclaim. Winner of the 2002 Best Rap Album Grammy and another Grammy for "Ms. Jackson," Outkast was on top of the world and creating some of the decade's best rap. Featuring a vast array of musical genres, the album was ambitious, serious, funny, and everything in between, creating a truly memorable album to kick off the decade in style.

The album runs you through a gauntlet of emotions, from the sheer beauty of "How to Disappear Completely" to the chaos that is "The National Anthem." While the band certainly took a risk, it paid off in spades, and is a true example of music's ability to bring out your emotions.
