#10: “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” (2011)
If friendship is magic, one need look no further than this heart-wrenching finale. When it appears that Homura’s ) time travel quest to save Madoka from death will need to be repeated again, Madoka takes matters into her own hands. Becoming a Magical Girl, Madoka then sacrifices her existence to ensure a peaceful continuation for Magical Girls everywhere, including Homura. It breaks our hearts but Madoka is more than happy to be the one to help her very best friend for once. A fitting conclusion for the series that changed the way we looked at Magical Girls in Anime forever.
#9: “Kill La Kill” (2013-14)

Just when you thought Kill la Kill couldn’t up the ante or wacky factor any higher, things get cranked up to 11. Ryuko literally battled a mountain in a final showdown with her mother Ragyo , in one of the biggest show stopping anime spectacles in a long time. In the end, her power was able to overcome Ragyo but it came with a tragic cost. Ryuko’s beloved uniform and companion, Senketsu placed himself ahead of Ryuko to shield her from atmospheric reentry and burned up. The bond between sexy warrior and her power granting clothing was very strong and many tears were shed over this saddening loss. Also, nudity, lots and lots of nudity.
#8: “School Days” (2007)

For a series with such cute and innocent character designs, School Day’s fame renown comes from it’s shocking ending. When lady-killer Makoto pushes his cliché harem a little bit too far, his long term girlfriend Sekai butchers him in a bloody fit of rage. The bloodshed doen’t end there however, as Makoto’s other girlfriend Kotonoha avenges Makoto and literally cuts Sekai open. The conclusion of what started off as a, cliché high school series really throws the whole genre through a loop, and changes our perspective on all the events leading up to the bloody finale.
#7: “FLCL” (2000-01)
FLCL’s unpredictable visual style and rapid fire storyline made it difficult to guess how the series would end. We’ve seen a lot of weird stuff so far, beginning with robots coming out of series protagonist Naota’s head. So what happens when it’s time for him to step up and save the world? Well, it involves guitar swords, flashy animation and the road leading to an uncertain future. Where Naota goes from here after his troubles are all over is unknown, but he’ll probably never look at life the same way ever again.
#6: “Death Note” (2006-07)

For an entire series, we watched Light Yagami ) build up his own legend. And for that same amount of time, we watched him grow darker and crueler in his quest to create the perfect world. After Light defeated and killed his rival L, it seemed like Light’s reign of terror would never end. Boy we’re we wrong. Light’s full blown mental meltdown was every bit as epic as his rise, and seeing him fall apart after losing complete control was oh so satisfying. Adding a final dash of irony; it’s Ryuk Light’s Shinigami Ally who ends Kira’s reign of terror by writing his name in a Death Note.

It had been a long journey for Satou finally climbing out of his reclusive shell with the help of his counselor and friend, Misaki But Welcome to the N.H.K. couldn’t simply end on a good note and it had to rattle Satou’s cage, and test out our emotions one more time before letting us go. The tension gets amped up when both Satou and Misaki attempt suicide. The attempts fail, but it’s uncertain if these two are really to live with their suffering. The lack of a clear-cut answer can be open to interpretation and it’s endings like these that make great forum discussions.
#4: “Gurren Lagann” (2007)
Gurren Lagann was a rollercoaster from start to finish with adrenaline filled characters, curious mecha designs and over the top action. Simon and his allies ended their journey with one more final assault on the dreaded Anti Spiral threat. Pushed to the brink of near annihilation, they got some surprise support from some familiar faces. Even long dead fan favorites made surprise appearances to bolster the morale of Team Gurren and help kick off one the most over the top, no holds barred eye fest battles ever animated.
#3: “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10)

Through fire, flames, and uncountable sacrifices, Edward and Alphonse Elric struggled plenty during their quest for the Philosopher’s Stone. It seems only fair they’d get the best ending possible. Just when it seemed like Al was lost forever, Ed makes one final payment for Alphonse’s life: his power of Alchemy. This seems more than adequate and Alphonse is able to return to his flesh and blood body. It was a huge relief to see two of the most beloved brothers in Anime get their true happy ending. Hug it out boys, you did good.
#2: Cowboy Bebop (1998-99)

Cowboy Bebop surprised viewers with its clever mix of western storytelling tropes, action and sci-fi story telling. And the finale ended just as strong as the series began, and series protagonist Spike Spiegel gets one hell of a goodbye. Director Shinichiro Watanabe is very coy in his replies to the question: Did Spike survive the ordeal or finally meet his end? Did he simply pass out from his wounds, something Spike has been known to do; or did he really bite the bullet? Somehow, lack of clear answer is the perfect send off to the legend of Spike Spiegel. In the final episodes of Code Geass, protagonist Lelouch had become the most hated man on the planet. He conquered the world and defeated not just his enemies but his former allies, the Black Knights. Much like Light in Death Note, Lelouche started off with good intentions but became the world’s greatest enemy. When his long time friend and rival Suzaku disguised as Zero and kills Lelouche, we learn that it’s all still part of the grand scheme. To unite the world in a peaceful manner, the entire planet needed an enemy they could all stand against, and to rejoice together when that enemy falls. Talk about a noble sacrifice.
