Top 10 Best Looks at the 2023 Met Gala

Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Best Looks at the 2021 Met Gala. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most stunning, ambitious, and buzz-worthy outfits to grace this year’s Met Gala. What’s your favorite Met Gala look of 2021? Let us know in the comments.

#10: Simone Biles

This gymnast holds the records for the most World gold medals and the most World Championship medals. If fashion was an Olympic event, Biles might have picked up a few more medals at the Met Gala. Seriously, though, it takes a champion with Biles’ unbreakable spirit to walk a mile in this Area dress. The work of Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk, this ensemble is comprised of three garments. While the starry catsuit and minidress are sensible enough, Biles’ crystal-embellished skirt brings the dress’ weight to 88 pounds. Although the dress was heavy, Biles said that it made her feel “beautiful, strong, and empowered.” It brings out Biles’ athleticism and glamor all at once.

#9: Valentina Sampaio

The first openly transgender model for Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Valentina Sampaio is constantly breaking new ground. It’s only fitting that such a trailblazing woman would rise like a phoenix at the Met Gala. This Brazilian beauty sizzled in this fiery woven slit dress matched with equally ravishing high heels. The dress is defined by its graceful sleeves reaching down to the floor. When Sampaio waved her arms in the air, it appeared as if she had sprouted a pair of wings and was about to take flight. The sleeves easily could’ve backfired on Sampaio, but she utilized them flawlessly. Her crimson wings are so hypnotic that we could spend all day gazing into them.

#8: Gabrielle Union

Nothing says unity like a circle. Gabrielle Union took this to heart with her met gala dress, which is made up of 10,000 circles. In the works since April, the dress reportedly took 1,400 hours for designer Iris Van Herpen to complete. The time and dedication shine through in every facet of Union’s ensemble. It almost appears as if Union is adorned in bubbles, popping onto the scene like a beautiful swan. Union topped off the look with a striking necklace and a twisted ponytail courtesy of hairstylist Larry Sims. Through this look, Union wanted to represent change, saying, “Every step it changes… all the colors change, just like America.” It’s a look and message we can all sing praises.

#7: Normani

This gifted singer and dancer made waves at the gala in this bold Valentino ball gown designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli. Normani took several risks with this ambitious look. Puffed sleeves can be overkill and not everyone has what it takes to pull off yellow mustard. Normani is a vision of perfection, however, wrapped up in a dress fit for a queen. It’s hard for us to single out our favorite aspect of the outfit, from the plentiful skirt, to the sleek waistline, to the almost angelic sleeves. It’s easy to miss the diamond necklace, which is the cherry on top of an ensemble we could simply eat up.

#6: Anok Yai

One of the top models working today, Anok Yai is the epitome of grace in this ensemble. Yai adorns her black dress with diamonds resembling stars and snowflakes. The look is only made more dignified by Yai’s matching feather boa. This outfit is a seamless fusion of black and silver, but Yai sneaks in a refined emerald color with her two necklaces. Yai kept her hair simple with a pixie cut slicked sideways, which we think was a wise call. Between the shimmering dress and Yai’s natural beauty, she didn’t need any else to wow onlookers.

#5: Megan Fox

One day after stunning at the MTV Video Music Awards, Fox arrived at the Met Gala in another eye-catching ensemble. Continuing her streak of spicy looks, the actress lit up the venue in this blazing Dundas dress. Fox paired her backless gown with matching high heels, once again proving that red is the steamiest color. From the lace-up v-neck to the elegant train, this dress is an absolute bombshell that strikes the ideal balance between class and allure. We’re just as obsessed with Fox’s hair, which draws inspiration from golden age model Bettie Page. Fox already looks a lot like Page, but the bangs make for an uncanny homage. She makes the look her own, however, with a lengthy braid by Andrew Fitzsimons.

#4: Iman

From Calvin Klein to Gianni Versace, Iman has been a source of inspiration for some of the most iconic fashion designers who ever lived. She also caught the eye of Harris Reed, the designer of this daring ensemble. The Somali-American shined like a golden sun at this year’s gala, which can primarily be attributed to her feathered headpiece. According to Iman, the headpiece wasn’t as heavy as it looks. Iman quickly fell in love with Reed’s concept drawings, comparing the outfit to “a ray of light after all the darkness we felt.” While the headpiece is the main attraction, Iman’s feathered skirt cage also captures the hopeful sentiment of a new sun rising. Hairstylist Oscar James and makeup artist Keita Moore rounded out the look.

#3: Dan Levy

Love is universal and few looks sum this up better than Dan Levy’s Met Gala debut. Although David Rose can be an eccentric personality, Levy describes himself as an “introverted person.” When Levy arrived, however, all eyes gravitated towards his Jonathan Anderson ensemble and the powerful message at its core. From his pants to his tulle sleeves, Levy draped himself in the globe. Levy’s blue button-down shirt served as the centerpiece, showcasing an image of two men lovingly embracing each other. This image is derived from artist/activist David Wojnarowicz, who died in 1992 from AIDS-related complications. It’s a moving tribute from one David to another, as well as a beacon of equality for the LGBTQ+ community. What’s more, it’s simply the best.

#2: Lil Nas X

You can always count on Lil Nas X to make a dramatic entrance, but he outdid himself this time. The rapper practically proclaimed himself king of this year’s Met Gala, sporting three royal Donatella Versace outfits in one. Lil Nas X stormed onto the scene in an extravagant gold cape, encapsulating everything other than his head. He subsequently shedded the cape to reveal a suit of armor with the Midas touch. We would’ve been more than satisfied if this was his final look, although Lil Nas X had one more surprise up his gold sleeves. He broke free from the armor, wearing a gold embellished bodysuit underneath. This was his first Met Gala, and - in typical Lil Nas X fashion - he hit the ground running. #1: Billie Eilish

Every Met Gala has a Cinderella moment, and this year, that distinction went to Billie Eilish. We never know what to expect from Eilish when she hits the carpet, but it’s usually something that screams angst. The goth-pop icon went in a completely new direction here, donning a nude princess ball gown inspired by Holiday Barbie. With a 15-foot train and a skirt that could fill a pumpkin carriage, it’s a far cry from the attire that Eilish usually rocks. Eilish also traded in green and black for a blonde hairdo reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe. Eilish took on this drastically different look on the condition that Oscar de la Renta stop using fur. It’s a look that’ll get people talking in more ways than one.
