Love is dead, these breakups prove it. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we're taking a look at famous breakups that made us lose faith in romance… at least in Hollywood. Our countdown includes Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas, Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt, Chris Pratt & Anna Faris, and more!

#10: Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas

Top 10 Times Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner Made Us Believe in Love

One day, you’re publishing a video on the Top 10 Times Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner Made Us Believe in Love. Four months later, you read the most soul-crushing headline since the Red Wedding. Turner and Jonas had been dating for three years when they got hitched… twice (once in Vegas and again in France). The two weddings would be followed by the birth of their two daughters. Between Turner popping up in the Jonas Brothers’ music videos and their adorable social media posts, it seemed like a fairy tale love story. Then in September 2023, “after four wonderful years,” the two released a joint statement announcing that they “mutually decided to amicably end [their] marriage.” Jonas filed for divorce, requesting “shared parental responsibilities.”

#9: Debbie Reynolds & Eddie Fisher

Few celebrity love triangles rocked Old Hollywood like the one shared between Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Elizabeth Taylor. On the surface, Fisher and Reynolds had an idyllic marriage, being publicized as America’s Sweethearts. Behind the scenes, Fisher was cavorting with multiple women. Among them was Taylor, whom Reynolds had considered a friend. The affair commenced after Taylor’s husband Mike Todd died in a plane crash. Reynolds and Fisher’s divorce was finalized on May 12, 1959. That same day, Fisher married Taylor in Vegas. This marriage would also end in a love triangle with Taylor falling for her “Cleopatra” co-star, Richard Burton. That marriage didn’t end happily either, although Reynolds eventually forgave Taylor, even co-starring in the TV movie “These Old Broads.”

#8: Sofía Vergara & Joe Manganiello

We didn’t know how much we wanted a “Modern Family”/“True Blood” crossover until Sofía met Joe. Vergara’s co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson introduced the two at the 2014 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Manganiello was compelled to ask for Vergara’s number after her engagement to Nick Loeb was called off. Although Vergara was initially hesitant, she dated Manganiello for just six months when he proposed on Christmas Eve. The following November, they tied the knot in Palm Beach, Florida. For the next seven years, it wasn’t a red carpet without them. Alas, on July 17, 2023, one week following Vergara’s birthday, their divorce was announced. They had reportedly been “growing apart for some time,” although a source claims the breakup brought “no drama.”

#7: Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Top 10 Times Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Made Us Believe in Love

For nearly a decade, the emotional rollercoaster of Liley uplifted/wrecked us. It started when Cyrus and Hemsworth played lovers in 2010’s “The Last Song.” A real romance brewed behind the music, although their relationship was on-again, off-again for three years. Even after Hemsworth popped the question in May 2012, the relationship remained rocky with the engagement called off in September 2013. That seemed to be the end until rumors of rekindled feelings resurfaced in 2016, culminating in another engagement. Two years later, they finally said, “I do.” We hoped for a Nicholas Sparks-esque happily ever after, but we got a Nicholas Sparks-esque tearjerker with their divorce announced in 2019. While they’ve gotten back together before, it’ll take more than flowers to mend this breakup.

#6: Jason Momoa & Lisa Bonet

Top 10 Moments That Made Us Love Jason Momoa

You can see most celebrity breakups coming from miles away. However, we were genuinely shocked and saddened to hear of Jason Momoa’s separation from Lisa Bonet in January 2022. While the couple had only been married for almost five years, their relationship went back nearly 17 years. We could actually go back even further, as an 8-year-old Momoa first saw Bonet on “The Cosby Show” in 1987. The two wouldn’t formally meet until 2005, having two children within the next three years. Almost three decades after Denise Huxtable caught Momoa’s eye, the couple commemorated their long-term relationship with a low-profile wedding. Although their split caught many off guard, the two have remained friendly and supportive of each other. Whatever happens, Momoa considers Bonet his family.

#5: Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan

Top 10 Reasons We’re Sad Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan Tatum Broke Up

2006 was a breakthrough year for Tatum and Dewan, who co-starred as dancers from different backgrounds in “Step Up.” The film didn’t just change their careers. It marked the beginning of a real-life love story, culminating in the two exchanging vows in 2009. For the next decade, Tatum and Dewan defined relationship goals as they grew their family, slayed the red carpet, and even revisited their roots on “Lip Sync Battle.” We all took a step back when news broke of their separation and subsequent divorce. In a mutual statement, they described themselves as “two best friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.” Tatum nonetheless called the breakup “terrifying.”

#4: Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt

It’s weird to think that those born after 2005 won’t recognize a pop culture landscape where Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were a couple. It’s even stranger that kids born after 2019 won’t be familiar with the term “Brangelina.” For over a decade, Pitt and Jolie were the celebrity supercouple. The idea of them no longer being an item was like Los Angeles without the Hollywood Sign or the Oscars without little gold men. They were ingrained in celebrity culture as we knew it. Unfortunately, the illusion was shattered in September 2016 when the two separated after two years of marriage. Unlike some of the other entries on this list, the ensuing divorce was a long, messy one entailing arguments, legal battles, accusations, and rumors.

#3: Chris Pratt & Anna Faris

Also in:

Top 10 Moments That Made Us Love Chris Hemsworth

The Top 10 Times Anna Faris And Chris Pratt Made Us Believe In Love was probably the first sign that some of our videos may be jinxed. Can you blame us for cheering them on, though? They seemed like such a cute pair, sharing a similar sense of humor, adoring social media presence, and fascination with dead bugs. That last one might sound like a joke, but Faris cited insect collecting as an early bonding experience that led to marriage in 2009. Eight years later, they separated with the divorce finalized in 2018. Since then, Pratt has married Katherine Schwarzenegger while Faris wedded cinematographer Michael Barrett. The blended families seem to be in a good place with Faris hoping they can eventually celebrate holidays together.

#2: Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner

Top 10 Times Jennifer Garner Was Awesome

Developing a friendship on the sets of “Pearl Harbor” and “Daredevil,” Affleck and Garner emerged as a couple at the first game of the 2004 World Series. Affleck’s other love, the Boston Red Sox, were playing. Less than a year later, the two were married and expecting their first of three children. The couple remained a rep carpet staple until separating in 2015. Although estranged, they continued to support one another with Garner escorting Affleck to rehab in 2018. Their marriage nonetheless ended that same year. In 2020, Affleck called the divorce “the biggest regret of [his] life.” Having since renewed his romance with Jennifer Lopez, though, maybe love isn’t quite dead yet. Likewise, Garner has entered a relationship with businessman John C. Miller.

#1: Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz

Over the course of several years, audiences fell in love with Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. The real-life husband and wife shared natural chemistry onscreen, proving unbeatable in the ratings. Like their onscreen counterparts, Ball and Arnaz’s marriage was chaotic, albeit in different ways. Although they supported each other professionally, the two were known for arguing behind closed doors. With Arnaz’s alcohol use disorder and adultery at the forefront of their problems, the 20-year marriage ended in 1960. While both remarried, Ball and Arnaz stayed friends until the end. Arnaz would say in his later years, “‘I Love Lucy’ was never just a title.” Arnaz also said, “I love you,” to Ball over the phone shortly before his death. The romance might’ve been dead, but the love wasn’t.
