In August 2023, Netflix premiered its live-action adaptation of the beloved anime “One Piece,” proving that the platform could get it right. Celebrate the series’ success and Halloween by becoming the wildly ambitious and aspiring “King of the Pirates” Monkey D. Luffy. There’s a slew of unique characters to emulate, but Luffy’s outfit is one of the easiest to throw together; all you need is a red vest or coat, blue denim shorts, comfy sandals, and of course, the straw hat. And don’t forget his cheerful smile. You could also go for Nami, Roronoa Zoro, Usopp, Sanji – the options are practically endless. Better yet, go all-out and assemble a Straw Hat Crew of your own.
#9: Indiana Jones “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (2023)
Fifteen years after “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, Harrison Ford reprised his legendary role as the titular explorer in 2023’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” While the movie didn’t do well at the box office, the new installment reignited our love of Indy. To get his iconic look, find a brown leather jacket, fedora, and boots, alongside a beige or tan shirt and pants, a satchel, and a whip. His clothes go through varying levels of disarray, which gives you the chance to play up the ruggedness. You’ll find plenty of Indiana Jones costumes for sale. Halloween isn’t all about masquerading as scary monsters or horror slashers. Channel your inner royal and dress up as the titular Queen Charlotte from Netflix’s “Bridgerton” spinoff. In addition to exploring the 19th century timeline, the series goes back in time to the mid-late 1700s, following a younger Charlotte. And yes, she’s incredibly fashionable at any age. Given the artistry of elaborate gowns and jewels and towering hairstyles, you have a big DIY project ahead of you. A ball gown fit for the Georgian era and Marie Antoinette-style wig will get you started, but prepare to bring out the scissors and glue for some bedazzling. If you prefer the flowing empire waist dresses of the Regency era, opt for emulating Kate Sharma or Daphne Bridgerton.

Chances are you or someone you know has donned a Spider-Man costume before. But as 2023’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” made evident, there’s more than one Spidey. Actually, there’s a lot of them. Miles Morales’s distinct costume has gained popularity since the 2018 animated film. We’re seeing more Gwen Stacy, aka Ghost Spider, too. Now we also have the more casually costumed heroes like Jess Drew, aka Spider-Woman, and fan-favorite Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk, in the mix. Both are excellent choices, especially if you’re not into spandex. And if you prefer comfort, throw a pink robe over an old Spidey costume, and bam, you’re Peter B. Parker. All the better if you have a little Mayday to hang around with you.

Most of us have dressed up as a Disney character or two at some point, and the princesses are probably the most popular choices. 2023 isn’t the first year you’ll see fans of “The Little Mermaid” wearing Ariel costumes, but it is the first time since Halle Bailey starred as the Disney princess in the live-action adaptation. Bailey’s costume is noticeably different from the animated Ariel, as she opts for an iridescent bralette instead of the classic seashell bra, which is likely more comfortable. When it comes to makeup, both versions of Ariel keep it simple, even in their above-the-sea looks. However, Halloween is the best time to go full mermaid-core with makeup and accessories. And if you’re feeling really ambitious, you could give Ursula a try!

Swifties worldwide have been following the cultural phenomenon that is the Eras Tour since it kicked off in March 2023. There’s lots to admire, including the fashion statements. Throughout the concert’s eras, Swift pays homage to some of her past looks and albums in a variety of beautiful bodysuits, dresses, ball gowns, and two-piece ensembles. Which one you choose to wear on Halloween depends on how much effort and money you’re willing to spend. The easiest, most affordable option would be the “22” music video white tee and black sequin shorts combo from the “Red” era. But if you want a challenge, try recreating “Reputation”’s edgy one-sleeve, one-legged jumpsuit with embellished sequin snakes. No matter the era you pick, you’re sure to turn heads.

Here’s yet another costume, or costumes, making a comeback this Halloween. The 2023 “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” features more than these iconic Nintendo characters for costume inspiration but you can’t go wrong with this trio. Mario and Luigi are super easy with their overalls, color-coded shirts and hats, white gloves, and mustaches. We’re used to seeing Princess Peach in her pink dress and crown. But the movie also showcased an awesome pink and white moto outfit that even Anya Taylor-Joy was dying to replicate on the red carpet. It’s a versatile group getup for friends as well as families, though don’t rule out hitting the Rainbow Road solo. And okay, we guess Bowser would be a cool costume, too.

This year is the first Halloween since Netflix dropped their hit series “Wednesday” in November 2022. So you’re guaranteed to see many a Wednesday Addams, likely with Thing on their shoulder. Over the years, a white collared black dress and braided pigtails became a solid last-minute costume. But the show dressed Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday in an array of goth glam outfits, ranging from casual sleuthing wear to the jaw-dropping Rave’N dance dress. It’s also not hard to find the instantly recognizable Nevermore Academy uniform, so you could be whichever Fur, Fang, Scales, or Stoner you want. But if you want to add some color, grab the Enid to your Wednesday and rock their Poe Cup catsuits. Just remember the bubbly werewolf’s get-up has pink stitching.
