Workplace romances can be messy, but the Green Lantern was never much for playing by the rules. First meeting as children moments before the future hero watched his father’s test plane go down in flames, the two later reconnected when Carol took over as the new boss at Ferris Air, and Hal became the company’s newest test pilot. Of course, neither one imagined that they’d not only fall in love but later become cosmic heroes powered by willpower and love respectively - and even become enemies at one point. Their relationship has been rocky, to say the least, but it is the DC universe, after all, nothing's stable there.

A good relationship has to be able to withstand a lot of pressure, and when you’re at the bottom of the ocean there’s pressure to spare. Like her husband, the Queen of Atlantis is an outsider, having been born in an alternate dimension known as Xebel. The two married, one of the first comics couples to do so, and had a child shortly thereafter. But tragedy befell the happy family when Black Manta kidnapped Arthur Jr and killed him. It was this horrible event that left their marriage irreparably broken for many years. But time, and continuity-resetting reboots heals all wounds, and the two are once again happily in love.

Love can blossom in the darkest places, and when it comes to the DC Universe it doesn’t get much darker than Apokalypse. A hellish world ruled by the tyrannical Darkseid, this fiery cauldron of pain and misery, it’s not exactly the most romantic of locales. But when the leader of an elite group of women warriors and Darkseid’s adoptive son crossed paths, love bloomed despite the unpleasant surroundings. Escaping to Earth and joining the superhero scene, the two have attempted to put their past behind them. But more often than not they’re pulled back into their previous lives, helping to battle Darkseid alongside the heroes of Earth.

The histories of these winged heroes has been written and rewritten so many times that getting it all straight is darn near impossible, but here’s the short version: centuries ago, Prince Khufu of Egypt was exposed to a strange metal of alien origin, which was rebuilt into incredible weaponry and equipment, but also caused Khufu and his beloved Chay-Ara to become locked in an eternal cycle of death and reincarnation. Today, their souls live on in bodies of these longtime heroes. Fearsome warriors dedicated to truth and justice, they’ve been some of the most stalwart heroes in the DC Universe throughout its many incarnations.

The two first additions to what would eventually become an entire “Bat-family”, these future lovebirds met as young adults when they adopted the roles of Robin and Batgirl respectively. Though they often came close to giving in to their feelings for one another, it wasn’t until years later that their relationship finally blossomed. By this point, they had each adopted new crime-fighting personas, and the former Batgirl had been confined to a wheelchair following her brutal assault by The Joker. In the end, the pair got a happy ending in at the last second, tying the knot just before continuity was reset by the events of “Flashpoint”.

And speaking of the Scarlet Speedster, he’s had his own main squeeze for much of his existence, and in true superhero fashion, she’s a plucky reporter. Unbeknownst to either of them at the time, the future Mrs. Flash had actually been born in the 30th century and was sent back to our time by her parents. It was here that she met Barry Allen, police scientist and secretly Central City’s favorite hero. The two fell in love and eventually married, going on to weather everything that usually comes with superhero marriages: death, rebirth, larger-than-life cosmic mega-events, and the occasional invasion by super-intelligent gorillas. Oh, and time travel. Lots of time travel.

This stretchy former member of the Justice League International frankly wouldn’t be nearly as effective as a crimefighter and detective if it weren’t for his fearless wife. Not content to let her husband have all the fun, the former debutant frequently tagged along for many of her husband’s adventures, lending her own skills at crime-solving to his and often acting as a sardonic straight woman to his more goofy personality. The two were devoted to one another, so much so that after their tragic deaths they remained side by side as ghost detectives, solving crime from beyond the grave. Now that’s what we call relationship goals.

You’d think that a rich kid turned socialist superhero and a fishnet-clad vigilante with a sonic scream wouldn’t have much in common, but these two DC icons just can’t seem to keep away from one another. First meeting as teammates on the Justice League, the two quickly sparked up a fiery romance that has become an enduring part of each of their characters. It’s almost become a running gag how often the two have proposed only to break it off for one reason or another. Maybe it’s his top-notch facial hair or her take-no-prisoners attitude, but these two just can’t stay apart from each other for long.

When it comes to superhero romances, it doesn’t get more tempestuous than this. Two characters on opposite sides of the law, one a brooding vigilante and the other a devil-may-care cat burglar, they really should be mortal enemies. And heck, sometimes they have been. But given enough time, the Dark Knight and his feline opposite number will always give in to their romantic urges, with flirtations in mid-battle usually giving way to unbridled passion. The Caped Crusader has had many love interests, but at the end of the day, there’s only ever been one to get her claws into him this deeply.
