#9: Reset the Danger Room “X-men” (1993) Genesis version

Taking place in the stage Mojo Crunch, no relation to us here, after defeating the boss of the level, the game instructs you to: restart the computer. But there’s no switch in the level that allows you to do this, so what do you have to do? You have to restart your Genesis, but here’s the catch: It has to be a soft reset, meaning if you hold the reset button down too long, you’ll end up restarting your game and losing your progress; probably not the brightest decision.

#8: Pretty much non-existent “The Stanley Parable” (2013)

A successful indie delight, this game has its narrator try to tell the player what to do, but if the player ignores the narrators commands, he starts to take out his frustration on the 4th wall, eventually becoming so fed up that he’ll load up Minecraft, and then Portal. Hang on I thought we put this highe, why is it only at number 8? Wait is that what that button does?

#7: Also pretty much non-existent “Kid Icarus: Uprising” (2011)

Top 20 Fourth Wall Breaks In Video Games

This game has a habit of constantly breaking the 4th wall thanks to its quirky dialogue, and it happens right from the start. (Who’s the Icarus character?) This one’s loaded with instances of 4th breaks, from complaining about its own game mechanics to even referencing another game universe all together. (They look like Metroids) Mind you, the breaks do get a bit repetitive after a while, but it still works hard for it’s spot at #7.

#6: Calling The Developer Hotline “Monkey Island 2: Lechuck’s Revenge” (1991)

The Monkey Island series is also renowned for breaking the 4th wall, even going so far as try a joke that confused players so bad they thought their game was broken, known as the infamous stump joke. But the 2nd game’s most memorable moment comes when Guybrush is lost in the woods on Dinky Island when he calls the help hotline to the developer Lucasarts. Oh remember that failed Stump Joke we mentioned? You can even ask about that…

#5: The game’s locked up “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” (2001)

Top 10 Video Games That Break the 4th Wall

From constantly chatting with his narrator, having a phone call with his voice over actor, and rewriting his own script, Deadpool is painfully aware of the forth wall at all times. The reason why Deadpool isn’t #1 is because his antics in this game get old really quickly, and becoming less and less creative as it wears on.

#3: The hallucinatory middle stick “Batman: Arkham Asylum” (2009)

Top 10 Video Games That Mess With You In Real Life

(Show that) Ohhh you were supposed to use the middle stick? … You mean on an N64 controller?

#2: Psycho Mantis “Metal Gear Solid” (1998)

Metal Gear Solid as whole once again is a franchise that frequently breaks the 4th wall, but the most iconic breaking moment comes from Psycho Mantis in the 1st game. In this scene the guy will read you memory card and tell you what games you’ve been playing, and also demonstrates his psychic abilities by making your controller vibrate. Oh and the kicker: to defeat him you have to plug your controller into the 2nd player port. Before we get to the top spot, lets take a look at some honorable mentions

#1: Sanity Effects “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” (2002)

Believe it or not the most creative use of breaking the 4th wall we’ve seen hasn’t come from corny humor, but rather from psychological horror. Throughout the game if your sanity bar runs too low the game starts to distort reality, making you think your sitting on the remote turning the volume down, making you think you accidently deleted your save files, and even bringing in the infamous Blue Screen of Death. Sheer creativity alone easily earns this game the top spot. Do you agree with our list Wonder Pink? Ok guess not.
