Every self-respecting interstellar invader needs an ultra-slick robotic sidekick; unfortunately for Zim, he only has GIR. The pair is sent to Earth with the intent to overthrow and dominate, but GIR proves a major reason why Zim’s many plans fail. He’s hyperactive, erratic and he eats just about anything. He’s sort of like an annoying younger sibling, or an over-excitable pet. An unpredictable, ticking time bomb of craziness, GIR’s great for comic relief, he’s just not that good at cosmic domination.

“Adventure Time” (2010-)

A console-inspired robot specifically built to understand fun; BMO is a faithful and protective friend to “Adventure Time” main characters, Finn and Jake. The retro, Game Boy-esque façade covers a machine of unspecified gender, that’s both clever and thoughtful, as well as hilarious. BMO has been known to burst into song, and has, on one occasion particularly, demonstrated an adorably threatening edge. This is a robot you can depend on for laughs, but also for loyalty.

A robot custom-built for military use, Number 5 was originally meant to be an instrument of war. But then he’s struck by lightning, causing him to develop self-awareness and a human-like desire for knowledge, or ‘input’. Number 5 then goes on the run from the US military in an attempt to preserve his newfound personality. But a newfound consciousness brings plenty of mistakes and misunderstandings, which also become increasingly entertaining for us. By the movie’s end, we’re envious of Stephanie, because we want a Number 5 of our very own!

A clinkier and clankier bag of bolts than most to make today’s countdown, Fender isn’t exactly the pinnacle of technology. But what he lacks in design, he makes up for in general showmanship. Voiced by Robin Williams, Fender is a fierce friend to Rodney despite trying to steal his foot upon first meeting him. This guy may be constantly falling apart, and usually at the most inopportune moments, but he’s a vital component to this story all the same.

Though this movie wasn’t primarily made to make people laugh, TARS, closely followed up by CASE, does offer the occasional bright spot of outer space humor. Unlike some on-screen robots, this machine is in no way designed to mimic humankind physically. But despite its big, grey blockish appearance, it’s been programmed with a humor setting that’s brilliantly sarcastic. Even during the most dangerous times of a life or death mission, TARS is on hand to lighten the mood.

“WALL-E” (2008)

The last of his kind, WALL-E is a trash compactor robot working on an abandoned Earth in an apparently futile bid to clean the planet so that humanity might eventually return. It’s a lonely life, but this Pixar favorite passes the time by collecting up everything he likes the look of, and by fixing himself using spare parts. WALL-E’s unorthodox interaction with a world he’s still trying to understand is what makes him one of the funniest, and definitely one of the cutest, robots around. Plus, it’s hard not to root for a guy who literally went to the other end of the galaxy to be with the robot he loves.

Labelled the ‘Paranoid Android’, Marvin is a severely depressed and seriously bored robot with a unique outlook on life. Marvin’s problem is that he boasts a brain the size of a planet, but there’s nothing in the universe that requires him to use even the tiniest fraction of it. As a result, he’s hugely apathetic towards everything, and totally unmotivated to change. For the 2005 film, Alan Rickman’s signature drawl is perfectly downcast as we, the audience, unrestrainedly laugh at this machine’s lackluster plight.

Probably one of Disney’s most popular characters of the twenty-first century, Baymax is designed as a personal ‘healthcare companion’, and is inherited by young genius Hiro under unfortunate circumstances. Aesthetically he appears closer to a marshmallow than a machine, but Baymax is highly intelligent, if a little slow on the uptake most of the time. The monotone voice and basic facial expression combine together for a character that’s as confused as he is courageous. And when his battery is low, you’ll laugh so hard you’ll need to be recharged!

The most humanoid of all today’s top ten, Kryten was very nearly a one-show wonder in “Red Dwarf”. The character was introduced as part of the first show of the second series, and was not originally intended to return. However, audience reaction was so favorable that he became a cast regular from series three onwards. A well-meaning robot who’s often led astray by Lister, his hilarity lies in his innocence, his reluctance to defy his programming as well as his disturbing attachment to vacuuming!

An all-out antihero, Bender is by no means a robotic role model. He drinks, gambles, and doesn’t care for social protocol. But he’ll have you rolling on the floor with laughter time and time again. Not even his own son is immune to Bender’s distinct lack of empathy, but for some reason, we love him regardless. An animated icon and a legendary wielder of one-liners, he’s the funniest, wittiest robot around. And if you don’t agree, you can ‘bite his shiny metal ass’!
