The first game between Nintendo and Square Enix following the 2 companies imfamous split in the late 90’s, Tactics Advance follows the story of a group of kids in the real world, who find a book that recreates their reality into a Final Fantasy world. The game’s turn based combat system takes a lot into consideration, if only limited by the fact that the battles have a referee that limit what abilities you can use…yeah screw that guy.

Another Turn Based Strategy on the list, and its not going to be the last. After the success of Super Smash Bros. Melee fans were left wonder what all the fuss was about with Fire Emblem. The West’s first taste of this series came on the Gameboy Advance, notably bringing on the notion of “Perma-death” where if a character dies in battle, they’re gone for good unless you restart the whole battle. Choose wisely, plan carefully.

As for the rest of the gameplay … well it’s a Zelda game: boomerangs and hookshots, you know the deal.

A quirky RPG starring the famous plumbing duo, Superstar Saga featured a combat system that’s determined by precise button presses rather waiting around to get hit. After Princess Peach’s voice is stolen Little Mermaid style, it’s up to the Mario Brothers to venture to the beanbean kingdom to retrieve it. Highlights include Peach’s voice bubbles that are literally explosive. Did we mention it’s quirky?
#6: “Mario Kart: Super Circuit” (2001)

The first title the premium series to appeared on a handheld console, Super Circuit wasn’t going to let system limitations get in the way of an awesome game. Allowing 4 players to play off one cartridge, fantastic track design, and the ability to unlock all the tracks from the SNES version, made this game a must have for any GBA owner.
#5: “Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald” (2003 & 2005)

Generation 3 started with a shock to Pokemon fans, since they had to start their collections all over again. As much as we loved the remakes of the original games, we’re giving the nod to the adventures in the new region, which featured a more in-depth story than its predecessors which differentiated depending on which version you had. Oh and you could now fight 2 on 2 battles for double the strategic depth.
#4: Metroid Fusion (2002)

The long awaited continuation to the Metroid saga, this game see’s Samus’s actions in Metroid 2 come back to haunt her, as her genocide against the Metroid’s has allowed for an even deadlier parasite known as the X to emerge with its natural predator now extinct. After contact with the species leaves her suit with weakened armor she heads to a zoology research space station now overrun by the X to take on her most dangerous foe yet … herself.
#3: "Advance Wars" (2001)
Like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars was the west’s first taste of this Turn Based Strategy series, coming from the Famicon Wars series in Japan. However unlike Emblem this game gave a more user friendly approach to managing your army. Add in a competitive multiplayer feature that only needed one system, Advance Wars pushed the envelope in countless directions.
#2: “Golden Sun” (2001) & “Golden Sun: The Lost Age” (2003)
Golden Sun was an RPG with a story that was so massive it had to be split into 2 games. Most notable was the magic system based around the elements that’s used for both battles, and puzzle solving, as well as finding elemental creatures called Djinn to boost your powers. The 2 games are listed together, because once you finished the first game; you could transfer your save data to the second, carrying over all the items, abilities you had collected, essentially making the 2 games one big adventure. And it’s a Konami title that takes out the top spot on Nintendo’s system, with arguably one of the best titles in the series, right alongside Symphony of the Night. Unlike other Castlevania games, this one takes place in the future, and features a nicely executed plot twist that we’re not going to spoil. The games biggest draw; the ability to steal enemy souls for unique abilities, making each replay a different and addictive in an attempt to collect them all.
