Top 10 Fastest Selling Video Game Products

Come and get it while they’re hot! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Fastest Selling Video Game Products!

For this list, we’re looking at games that sold incredibly well in within its first few weeks on the market. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds may have been one of the best selling games of 2017, but because it took a month to make it’s first million it doesn’t qualify for the list.

#10: “Super Mario Odyssey” (2017)

There’s no doubt that the Nintendo Switch has had a stellar first year! Nintendo had a new major release for almost every month, but October 2017 was going to be the biggest. We’d been itching for a new 3D Mario game, and “Super Mario Odyssey” was giving off a lot of “Mario 64” vibes. Of course, once the game launched, “Odyssey” started selling like hotcakes. “Odyssey” quickly became the fastest selling “Super Mario” game ever in the United States and Europe. Japan would be added to that list by the end of 2017. We really missed you, our plucky plumber!

#9: “Pokemon X & Y” (2013)

With each new release, the “Pokemon” franchise sets new sales records not just for the franchise, but for the console it releases on. So, when “Pokemon X & Y” was gearing up for launch, many were wondering if it would live up to the hype. Well, if a game sells four million copies within two days, we’d say it did. This was the first Pokemon game for the Nintendo 3DS, and it came with brand new Pokemon to collect, as well as beautiful 3D environments. The following titles: Sun & Moon fell just short of matching it’s predecessor sales numbers, though they were still pretty strong none the less.

#8: “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (2011)

From the minute we heard that glorious music, we knew “Skyrim” was going to be a major hit. First off, it’s an “Elder Scrolls” game. It’s got to be awesome, right? Second, it had been five years since the last major installment in the franchise. Since “Oblivion”, we had been waiting eagerly to see the new world Bethesda was crafting. Sure enough, “Skyrim” would go on to sell like wildfire. During its first week, “Skyrim” shipped seven million copies, growing to ten million by the end of its first month. We can only imagine the records that will be broken when “Elder Scrolls VI” comes out.

#7: “Diablo III” (2012)

The 10 HARDEST Diablo IV Bosses

The “Diablo” franchise remains to be one of Blizzard’s best franchises. Yeah, “Diablo III” didn’t have a pretty launch… *cough* Error 37 *cough*…but that didn’t stop us from nabbing our copies as soon as possible. “Diablo III” didn’t just become one of the best-selling PC games of all-time, but it also became the fastest-selling PC game, selling about 6.3 million copies within the first week of launch. There’s a lot of PC games out there, and the fact that “Diablo III” has held the record for six years is quite the feat.

#6: “Monster Hunter World” (2018)

Top 10 Best Weapons In Monster Hunter Games

Hoooooo, boy! “Monster Hunter World” is, without a doubt, one of the better games to come out of 2018 so far. We just can’t get enough of tackling quests with our friends while taking down these incredible behemoths. We’re really hoping Capcom supports this game for a long time, especially considering the records the game has broken. Within three days, the game shipped five million units, increasing to six million when it reached two weeks after launch. “World” became the fastest selling game in the franchise AND fastest selling Capcom game! Something tells us this game will be around for a couple of years…maybe longer?

#5: Nintendo Switch

When we first saw the console in October 2016, we knew we were going to get hooked from the start! Only question was, “How was the rest of the world going to take the new console?” Well, the world spoke, and the Nintendo Switch has become the fastest selling console in the United States, selling just under five million units within ten months, in fact it sold so well that Nintendo struggled to meet demand within that period. Considering the previous record holder was the Nintendo Wii, the Switch has clearly become an entirely new phenomenon. As a bonus, its first game, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”, became the fastest selling launch title ever.

#4: “Final Fantasy XV” (2016)

The 10 HARDEST Final Fantasy Games To Complete

“Final Fantasy XV” spent a heck of a long time in development. When your game has spent the past decade cooking in the oven, releasing it becomes an incredibly high risk for your studio. Little did we know, Square Enix had made sure their time wasn’t wasted. “Final Fantasy XV” proved to be one of the best games to have come out of 2016. In its first day, the game shipped five million units, breaking even with development costs simultaneously. With a deep story, intense combat, and fun gameplay, gamers were welcoming the newest entry in the franchise with loving arms.

#3: “Destiny” (2014)

Top 5 Reasons Destiny 2 Is Better Than Destiny 1

A new game from the studio behind the “Halo” franchise? It’s gotta be good, right? Well…sort of. All depends on who you ask, but anyways… “Destiny” was building up its hype, and it really paid off. Despite the shortcomings, the game earned around five-hundred million dollars from retail, setting the record for biggest new franchise launch of all-time. And that was on Day One. DAY ONE! Something tells us Bungie knew they had a gold mine on their hands. And we have to give a thumbs-up to Activision for taking such a big risk on this new franchise.

#2: NES & SNES Classic Edition

Show of hands, has anyone ever seen one of these before? No? Well, that’s not a big surprise because these babies sell so quick, you can barely land a pre-order on one of these, let alone find one in stores. Granted, part of this problem comes from stock shortages, but when your product is making headlines that say, “product is out of stock”, and on multiple occasions, that’s impressive. Inconvenient for us, but impressive nonetheless. Don’t get us wrong; keep selling those units! Just…you know…make more, please!

#1: “Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Five years after release, and “Grand Theft Auto V” is still raking in the cash! Within its first day, the game had sold over eleven million copies, generating more than eight-hundred million dollars. That number would grow to one billion dollars in sales, and that was on the third day! At this point, “GTA V” had become the fastest selling entertainment product of all-time. By the time the game reached its six-week mark, developer Rockstar Games had shipped nearly twenty-nine million copies. “GTA V” now holds seven Guiness World Records, some of which include “Fastest Video Game to Gross $1 Billion Dollars” and the “Fastest Entertainment Property to Gross $1 Billion Dollars.”
