VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Tal Fox
How are you doing... er, we me, how you doin'? Welcome to MsMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the times that the Joey Tribbiani actor left his castmates, and even himself, in stitches with accidental flubs and deliberate mess-ups. Our countdown includes “Take Off Your Robe!,” sea-cret keeping, do less, and more!

#10: Staring Straight Down the Lens “The One With The Cake”

When acting in front of a camera, there are a few simple rules: firstly, don’t look directly down the lens. The other is just because the audience is laughing doesn’t mean you should be, too. Matt LeBlanc gives his co-star this acting for TV 101 refresher on two separate occasions, but we’re focusing on the one from Emma’s first birthday party. During one outtake, Courteney Cox confesses that her gaze momentarily met the camera. Matthew Perry has plenty of fun with the flub, but just as we think things are getting back on track, LeBlanc can’t help but make his own dig, too.

#9: Do Less “The One with the Morning After”

A good actor is always willing to take notes to improve his performance, and indeed, that’s exactly what LeBlanc and Perry do here. In the scene, Chandler and Joey run in when they hear Monica and Phoebe’s wax-induced cries of pain. However, behind the scenes, it seems the moment needed a little tweaking until they got the energy just right. Apparently, one of their attempts was a little too extra for someone off-screen. So they try again with a more subdued performance— hey, they’re just following directions. Sure, that’s another take they can’t use, but it’s a great addition to the gag reel.

#8: Sea-Cret Keeping “The One with the Jellyfish”

Also in:

Top 10 Hilarious Lisa Kudrow Friends Bloopers

An unfortunate jellyfish incident in the season four premiere leads to an even more undesirable solution. So, when Joey, Chandler, and Monica start acting weird, Ross tries to get to the bottom of it. Joey’s passionate delivery of the line in the aired take is hilarious, and it seems LeBlanc thought so, too. In the bloopers, we see him struggling to get through the line without bursting into laughter and taking his scene mates down, too. At the rate he’s going, he doesn’t need to worry about anyone keeping his secret; his inability to get through the dialogue pretty much takes care of that.

#7: Joey’s a Big Fan of Rachel’s Trifle “The One Where Ross Got High”

Rachel’s Thanksgiving trifle is the catalyst for some of the series’ funniest and most memorable moments. Turns out, it also offers a heaping of unforgettable bloopers. David Schwimmer is the first to break as he overzealously tries to stuff his face with the trifle-shepherd pie hybrid dessert. LeBlanc barely breaks character as he watches his castmate laugh beside him. However, he then pulls the Joey-est move of all and takes Schwimmer’s portion for himself. It’s hysterical and kind of gross— did he not see Schwimmer spit it back out? We know Joey’s a fan of the dessert, but surely he can’t like it that much?

#6: Joey & Ross’ Nap “The One With the Nap Partners”

Also in:

Top 10 Times Joey was the Most Relatable Character on Friends

After Joey and Ross unintentionally become nap buddies, Joey spends the episode coaxing or tricking a hesitant Ross into joining him for another perfect snooze. It’s undeniably one of the more absurd storylines, but the entertainment factor is off the charts. It seems that LeBlanc and Schwimmer found it just as funny, if not funnier, than the audience. In the gag reel, we see numerous takes ruined by them breaking. The guys only need to lock eyes before the laughter rolls in. While you might think the hilarity might subside after the umpteenth take, that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

#5: “What Do I Smell?” “The One with Rachel's Crush”

Also in:

After Monica and Rachel lose their apartment to the guys, Monica goes overboard, trying to make their new home the gang’s hangout spot. In the episode, one of her methods involves wafting the smell of freshly baked cookies toward the other apartment. Let’s be honest; that would probably work on most of us, so it’s no surprise the group migrates toward the enticing scent. However, LeBlanc’s response to Phoebe’s question in this outtake would probably send everyone across the hall, too. This spontaneous ad-lib veers the scene way off course as the hilarity of LeBlanc’s remark lingers over the group.

#4: “Either the Dog Goes, or the Mime Goes” “The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs”

If you had to pick between a dog and your floof-hating friend, who would you choose? Yeah, not so easy, is it? Joey tries to warn him against sharing his unpopular opinion with the group, making way for this side-splitting blooper. In the aired episode, the gang responds to Chandler’s ultimatum with awkward silence. But in the blooper, LeBlanc gives us a peek into what might be going on in Joey’s head. It’s a surprisingly dark twist for the character, adding a ton of humor to the scene. Perry perfectly caps off the gag with his own witty quip, highlighting the duo’s impeccable chemistry.

#3: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Fire? “The One With the Late Thanksgiving”

Who hasn’t made important decisions with a round of rock, paper, scissors? How often do you find yourself in need of a tiebreaker? When Joey, Ross, Rachel, and Phoebe are late for Thanksgiving dinner, they waste more time in the hallway deciding who should enter first and face their hosts’ wrath. Joey believes he has the winning move until Phoebe rains on that parade. In a blooper, Schwimmer shares some... stronger words for Joey’s unconventional move. Still, it’s LeBlanc who gets the last laugh. In a subsequent outtake, when Ross asks Joey what he’s doing, LeBlanc fires back, igniting laughter from the rest of the cast.

#2: “Take Off Your Robe!” “The One With The Soap Opera Party”

Rachel finds out about Joey’s secret annual parties and wrangles herself an invite. However, it doesn’t take her long to spill the beans to others. In the aired take, Monica tries to call Joey out by insisting he open his robe and reveal his party outfit underneath. Instead, everyone catches a glimpse of Joey in his birthday suit. As funny as that is, the outtake takes the humor up a notch. When Joey goes to disrobe, the cast’s reaction is a mix of surprise and amusement. Why? Well, Joey isn’t baring all, but he’s got an interestingly placed photo of David Schwimmer... you know, down there. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. “Yoohoo!”, “The One with Phoebe's Cookies” LeBlanc Might Regret His Acting Choice, but We Don’t Chandler’s Freak Out Is Too Darn Hilarious, “The One Where Phoebe Runs” We’d Probably Have the Same Reaction if Our Friend Freaked Out That Hard “It’s Porcha!”, “The One With Joey's Porsche” LeBlanc Shifts the Sincerity of the Moment into Reverse Playing Fort, “The One Where Ross Moves In” When Chandler Catches His Friends in the Act, They Just Can’t Put a Zip on Their Laughter “Holden McGroin,” The One with the Fake Monica” No “Friends” Fan Will Ever Be Able to Say This Fake Stage Name without Smirking

#1: Tripping over His Mark “The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies”

The gang actually reminisced over this particular blooper during their 2021 reunion. In the episode, Joey bursts into Central Perk, all hyped up over his “Soap Opera Digest” interview. However, the outtakes reveal a cascade of mishaps—Joey takes a fall in the first, and subsequent takes are marred by glances at his mark, a toppling chair, and a final gaffe courtesy of Matthew Perry. Each blunder is funnier than the last, even leaving executive producer Marta Kauffman in fits of laughter. While luck may not have been on LeBlanc’s side that day, fans were gifted with a string of goofs that, much like Kauffman, left us rolling with laughter. Did we include your favorite LeBlanc flub? Let us know in the comments.
