This is for your own good. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Mercy Kills in Movies. For this list, we're not saying that killing someone is ever a good thing, so please don’t take this video the wrong way - but there are times when FICTIONAL people have to kill off other FICTIONAL people for their own good. And because several of these kills happen near the end of the films in question, we are issuing a general warning spoiler alert now.

#10: Lt. Jean Rasczak “Starship Troopers” (1997)

Lieutenant Jean Rasczak is the renowned and respected commander of the Roughneck squadron and he has one rule: “everyone fights, no one quits”. He loves all the soldiers that are under his wing and expects them to fight with all their hearts in every battle. This is testedin one of the squadron’s biggest fights when they are ambushed by a group of Arachnids. When a Tanker Bug emerges from the underground, it rips Rasczak’s legs off and leaves him to beg his subordinate and former student Rico to make good on his duties as a soldier… and finish him off. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it.

Anyone who’s grown up in a rough neighborhood will tell you to never get involved with a gang. But in Johnny Sirocco’s case, it's too late for that. Johnny introduces his good friend Amsterdam to William Cutting, the man who killed Amsterdam’s father years before. After finding out who Amsterdam really is, thus making him his nemesis, Cutting sends a henchman to kill Amsterdam, but the latter gets the upper hand. So, naturally, Cutting gets a hold of Johnny and leaves him for dead in retaliation. After being run through with an iron pike and hung in the Square, Amsterdam sees his dying friend. As he loses more breath after every second, we can’t blame Amsterdam for feeling forced to put Sirocco out of his misery.

#8: Christo “The Beach” (2000)

In this 2000 flick, Leonardo DiCaprio plays a college student named Richard who desperately wants to visit an exotic island. When he gets to said island in the Gulf of Thailand, things continually go from bad to worse, such as when one of his Swedish companions, Christo, gets his legs bitten off by a shark. Christo decides to stay sheltered inside a tent and the rest of what little life he has slowly ticks away as his condition – and things around him - get worse. The scariest thing about this mercy kill is how Richard is tearfully looking directly into Christo’s eyes while he suffocates him. And unfortunately, Christo can only stare right back…

#7: ‘Sam’ Samantha “I Am Legend” (2007)

The loving and loyal German shepherd known as Sam would have definitely been any man’s best friend. Throughout the post-apocalyptic film, Robert Neville still manages to take good care of Sam despite there being no dog groomers, dog shampooers or other human beings left in the area. In return, Sam helps her owner to feel comfortable and less lonely in the isolated city as they fight against any Darkseekers – the once-human killers that’ve since been mutated by a virus. Unfortunately, one fight against a pack of infected dogs sees Sam get bitten and put in critical condition. Robert unsuccessfully attempts to cure her, but ends up having to put his best pal to rest, permanently – and we’re as heartbroken as he is.

Captain Vidal is one person that you definitely do not want any affiliation with. Especially if you are a Republican Rebel, since those are the people he uses as his torture victims. His personal doctor, Doctor Ferreiro, comes across one rebel in particular that Vidal has captured and beaten to a pulp. Disobeying Vidal’s orders, Ferreiro euthanizes the prisoner after he begged the doctor to kill him. This causes Vidal to demand why his doctor would deliberately go against something he said. Ferreiro shows extravagant bravery and pride when he tells Vidal he prefers an ethical lifestyle and that he will not obey anyone simply because they asked him to… unfortunately, the action and his words also spell the end for this professional.

#5: Billy Drayton, Dan Miller, Amanda Dumfries & Irene Reppler “The Mist” (2007)

One of the highlights – if you can call it that - of “The Mist” is actually its depressing ending – some called it fantastic, while others were actually upset about the result. Whatever your thoughts, it’s still unforgettable. After being continually threatened by monsters and numerous catastrophes happening in the area around them, a group of survivors made up of David, Billy, Dan, Amanda and Irene decide there’s no point to continue on. Despite their attempt to escape their situation there’s no hope for survival so they should just succumb to death on their own terms. The camera is outside the van as David shoots everyone, and that only adds to the suspense of the multiplemercy kills, as does the flash and sound of each gunshot...

#4: Seth Brundle / Brundlefly “The Fly” (1986)

We all know that once you start dating someone, he or she may begin to change. Some changes are small, and sometimes… they include him or her transforming into a fly. Seth Brundle woos the beautiful journalist Veronica Quaife and the two hit it off. But then, a teleportation experiment gone awry leaves Seth with the characteristics and attributes of a fly, creating the “Brundlefly”. Later when Veronica learns she is pregnant, Seth attempts to fuse himself with her so they can become “the ultimate family”. Veronica escapes butin the process, Brundlefly becomes increasingly deformed and gross, which forces Veronica to sorrowfully end her lover’s life.

One of the most well-known dogs in cinema, Old Yeller protected his owners when danger arrived. And if you showed him affection, he would show you some right back. Young Travis Coates is warned to take good care of the Labrador Retriever/Mastiff mix, as there is a spread of rabies around some animals in the town. Old Yeller remains healthy until one dreadful night where he is bitten by a rabid wolf. The plague ultimately makes him increasingly hostile towards his own family, and leaves Travis no choice but to put his furry companion out of his misery, simultaneously bringing tears to audiences’ eyes.

#2: Randle McMurphy “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975)

Randle McMurphy ends up in a mental institution and wins the respect of all of the other patients thanks to his surprisingly outgoing personality. However, the main person McMurphy butts heads with is Nurse Mildred Ratched, who seems to rule over everyone with an iron fist. After McMurphy strangles Ratched, he’s punished in an extreme way: he’s lobotomized. We learn this through the shocked expression of his friend Chief Bromden, who discovers the scars on McMurphy’s skull and his near motionless body. As he is already dead in a matter of ways, Chief opts to put McMurphy to rest – indefinitely – and we can’t help but feel for them both. #1: Margaret ‘Maggie’ Fitzgerald “Million Dollar Baby” (2004)

It’s always a pleasure to have someone trustworthy and reliable in your life. Maggie Fitzgerald heavily relies on her trainer Frankie Dunn to help her become the best boxer she can be, and as such their partnership earns Maggie a great and positive reputation. However, following a string of victories, an illegal sucker punch in the ring leaves Maggie with a massive injury. Maggie makes a tearful and hopeless request, to which Frankie eventually gives in and injects Maggie with so much adrenaline that it sends her to the heavens. This scene shows that a person will do anything for the people he or she is close to, even if that means he or she will never get to be with them again. Do you agree with our list?
