#10: Bunnies! Floppy, Hoppy, Bunnies! “Night of the Lepus” (1972)

There’s actually a term for people who fear overgrown, mutant rabbits (or at least, rabbits in general): Leporiphobia. Can something so adorable ever really be threatening, though? While undeniably silly, “Night of the Lepus” does turn its fluffy fiends into intimidating creatures, at least to some extent. With herds of vicious bunnies the size of bison ramming through windows and sneaking up on truck drivers, you just might hop out of your seat a couple times. Whether you’re laughing or screaming, the were-rabbit attacks in this campy horror flick are more priceless than 24 “carrot” gold.

#9: Caught in a Web “Eight Legged Freaks” (2002)

Top 10 Caught Cheating Scenes in Movies

“Eight Legged Freaks” pays homage to the seemingly dead B-movie genre while maintaining a self-aware sense of humor. This scene in particular aptly blends horror and comedy as a colossal creepy crawler intrudes on a toweled Scarlett Johansson…before she became famous of course. Pressing her against the wall, the CGI spider entangles ScarJo in its web - and right after she took a shower too. David Arquette’s Chris isn’t much help, trying to fend Spidey off with a chair and scissors. Fortunately, ScarJo’s mom has it covered, being the local sheriff.

#8: Get the Antennae! “Them!” (1954)

Top 10 Brutal Animal Attacks In Horror Movies

“Them!” more than earns the exclamation point at the end of its title with some classic big bug attack moments. The most memorable scare in the movie is when one of these insects finally reveals itself to the audience and a petrified lady. Emerging over a hill in all of its animatronic glory, the bug homes in on its screaming prey. The cops are there to combat the beast, though, teaching us all a valuable lesson. If man-eating ants ever show up, always aim for their antennae.

#7: Busting a Gut “Ticks” (1993)

Originally titled “Infested” for test screenings, this eventual straight-to-video creature feature will make you crave the days when vampires were the only bloodsuckers in the monster racket. A notable highlight from the film is when one of these mutated pests gets attached to Carlton Banks, er…we mean Alfonso Ribeiro. Appropriately playing a character nicknamed Panic, Ribeiro pries himself free. The tick gets under his skin, however, and an enlarged arachnid-like creature later bursts out of its human host in demonic possession fashion. He won’t be dancing along to Tom Jones anymore.

#6: Rodents of Unusual Size “The Princess Bride” (1987)

“The Princess Bride” has everything one could want from a fairytale, including some good, old fashion monster slaying. After enduring two of the fire swamp’s three terrors, Westley and Buttercup must overcome a Rodent of Unusual Size - or R.O.U.S. for short. A fierce battle between the dashing swashbuckler and the crazy critter ensues. Getting down and dirty, Westley must use his swordsmanship, exceptional strength, and wits to prevail. Once the brute is set ablaze, our hero takes it out with three badass final blows. It appears they do indeed exist.

#5: Broke Into the Wrong Rec Room “Tremors” (1990)

The next time you’re in the desert, be sure to watch your step. You never know when a graboid might pop out and gobble you up. In “Tremors,” Kevin Bacon and the gang elude the burrowing sandworms by getting to a higher altitude. They attempt to warn a couple seeking refuge down in a basement. One of these grotesque grubs busts in, however, and attempts to give them tongue. Good thing they have an arsenal of firearms to take the graboid out in a sequence that’s equal parts humorous and kickass.

#4: The Basilisk “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (2002)

Top 10 Behind the Scenes Secrets From Harry Potter

Harry Potter’s second year at Hogwarts really sucks the audience in with its whimsical mystery. In the adventure’s final act, Harry comes face to face with Tom Riddle while avoiding direct eye contact with the basilisk. The serpent comes close to finishing the wizard boy when Fawkes the phoenix soars in, blinds the beast, and delivers Godric Gryffindor’s Sword. With a menacing environment, thriving tension, and exceptional staging, this climax amounts to a thrilling showdown as Harry once again proves himself as the boy who lived and a true Gryffindor.

#3: Mutations “The Hunger Games” (2012)

As a finale to the 74th Hunger Games, a pack of wild wolf/beast hybrids is sent to level off the remaining tributes. The mangy mutations become the least of Katniss and Peeta’s problems, though, when Cato shows up. Their fight for survival builds to a heart-pounding moment in which Katniss must make a crucial decision. While our heroes ultimately come out on top, they’re left feeling far from victorious. Demonstrating that her compassion is equal to her courage, Katniss puts Cato out of his misery as the mutts rip him apart.

#2: Swallowed Whole “Anaconda” (1997)

“Anaconda” has quite a few memorable kills courtesy of its slithering antagonists. Perhaps the best occurs as Terri and Danny find themselves wrapped in an awkward threesome with the enormous snake. After breaking out of the net, the anaconda decides it’d rather have Paul Serone for dinner instead. As it coils around Serone and suffocates him to death, we get a pretty cool POV shot from inside the snake’s gaping mouth. In a satisfying, if not unintentionally hilarious, payoff, the hunter becomes the hunted with the snake swallowing him whole. Before we frantically run away from our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: - Giant Mosquitoes “Mosquito” (1995) - Giant Mantis “The Deadly Mantis” (1957) - Giant Octopus “It Came from Beneath the Sea” (1955) - Giant Crocodile “Lake Placid” (1999) - Giant…Something? “The Host” (2006) - Killer Slugs “Slugs: The Movie” (1988)

#1: Shelob “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003)

Never before has a giant spider been more frightening or convincing than Shelob in “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” Just when it looks like Frodo’s escaped Shelob’s hellish lair, she surfaces again and rams her stinger through the Hobbit’s gut. The most shocking and subtly intense moment in the series is immediately followed by one of its most triumphant as Sam returns to save his friend. Challenging the Shadow Spider like a boss, Sam rises above being a sidekick to being this trilogy’s true hero. Do you agree with our list? What’s your favorite monstrous animal attack scene?
