The 10 WEIRDEST Moments in Metal Gear Solid Games

Metal Gear Solid is a game that forces you to take your time, making this all the more challenging. But, with precise timing and knowledge, players can glide through Shadow Moses making the intense, sweat inducing gameplay look incredibly easy. The end game rankings can also attribute to the speed in which the player finishes the game with the rank of 'Big Boss' being most prestigious – a feat that requires the player to be spotted no more than 4 times along with a number of other ludicrous restriction. This is made a bit easier by the the famous 'vent glitch' which lets players skip over half of the games story makes this one for the speed running elites.

#9: "Mirror's Edge" (2008)

Free-flowing in style and faster in pace, the parkour based game is a perfect contender for speed running. Taking control of 'Faith' players are encouraged to test their times with high flying skills against time trials and even other players online. The adrenaline of the gameplay can take hold of the player and immerse them into the high octane utopian city. Created to be a first-person free running simulator, Mirror's Edge is gorgeous in style and speed making any speed run a must-watch for fans of parkour.

#8: "Quake" (1996)

First person shooters tend to have a nag for making really awesome speed runs. Turning down the mouse sensitivity all the way to zero allows players to whip their body quicker than one can blink, making the treacherous hallways nothing short of a blast to go through. Couple this with a strategy of consistent jumping to add little boosts of speed and the once terrible beasties are left eating your dust. The current world record for Nightmare Mode is held by a player called Da Big Boi, clocking in at an impressive 12 minutes and 54 seconds.

#7: "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" (1992)

A game centered around a super-fast hedgehog, yeah that's probably good speed running contender. Using the game's own clock to add up the timings Speedrun.com adds the accumulative play times together to unearth the full playthrough time, which means no frantically skipping through cut scenes needed here. Careful knowledge of enemy placement means players can dart and dodge across the maps and makes for one of the most hotly contested speed running games. Who needs blast processing now eh?

#6: "Dark Souls" (2011)

7 Times Dark Souls Infiltrated Other Games

It's pretty safe to say that it’s pretty cathartic to see a brutally hard game demolished as swiftly as possible. The open world of Dark Souls is filled with hellacious baddies, but also a series of shortcuts to navigate your way through as quick as you can. Not only that but a glitch using the kilns allows players to skip entire sections of the game completely shortening some playthrough’s to under an hour. Whether by exploiting the game or not, you can't deny the wonderful feeling of taking down the pride of such a devastating game in mere minutes. Though the original game did feature a exploit called the Kin Glitch which allowed players to ski bosses, that’s since been patched out, demanding even greater dedication from speedrunners.

#5: "Super Metroid" (1994)

Also in:

10 Hidden Secrets In Super Mario Games

Much like Dark Souls, this epic Nintendo series has made its name is vast open, crazy and bending worlds. With a precise understanding of the games hit boxes, players can turn Samus Aran into Jackie Chan by leaping and bounding across every single platform and enemy that comes her way. With the best ending being accessible after completing the game in less than three hours, it's staggering to see some players beat this beast in under one. As it stands the world record for any percentage is forty two minutes and fifty seven seconds, while a 100% run comes in at 1 hour 19 minutes and 55 seconds, so I guess it's time to start practicing.

#4: "Resident Evil" (1996)

10 CENSORED Moments in Resident Evil Games

Probably the most popular survival horror game likes to challenge speedy gamers with its own unruly mechanics. Beating the game in under three hours unlocks a plethora of goodies to would-be speed runners such as a rocket launcher with infinite ammo. Whilst the zombies are frightening and frequent, true veterans are encouraged to duck and dodge past the hungry enemies to conserve ammo, or alternatively brisk through the entire game itself. Like with many great zombie games the real key is to run for your life, or in this case your world record.

#3: "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" (1998)

Top 10 Legend of Zelda Games

What was once a grand, adventurous epic can now be completely quicker than a short story. Link's trek through his childhood has been victim to a number of glitches and exploits to help speed runners wiz through the experience, no matter how ridiculous. Did you know that through a string of exploits, you can actually play some parts of the game as the wrong age? Since the Japanese version of the game has the largest number of exploitable glitches, it’s the one that speed-runners naturally prefer for their attempts.

#2: "Portal" (2007)

Valve is no stranger to giving the PC community some fantastic games, and the PC community are no stranger to speed runs. We're not sure how you'd ever work this out but continually jumping backwards increases Chell's momentum across GLaDOS's mind-bending maps. Whilst the developers did their best to make sure nobody exploits the immensely powerful portal gun, but surprise they managed it anyway. With some portal placements able to ricochet the player through the entire story many records have been set in under ten minutes. Whoa!

Before we unveil our top pick, let's slow down and look at some honorable mentions.

"Super Meat Boy" (2010)

"Pokemon Red/Blue" (1998)

"Doom II: Hell on Earth" (1994)

"Banjo-Kazooie" (1998)

#1: "Super Mario 64" (1996)

Not only is this exploit widely popular, but so are the ludicrous playthroughs that seak to complete the game at 100%. With endless categories for speed runners to choose from there's no denying the King of Nintendo's popularity among about this illustrious community.
