When the Little Mermaid exchanges her voice and fins for a pair of legs, she literally becomes a fish out of water. Although she gets off to a shaky start, the wide-eyed Ariel eventually proves to be quite good on her feet. Taking a tour of the kingdom, she makes a splash on the dance floor with Prince Eric. Their dance might be brief, but it brings the former mermaid one step closer to being part of her prince’s world. This scene was expanded upon in the Broadway adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” demonstrating that a dance is like a conversation without words.

Having spent years in a lonely, boring tower, Rapunzel is totally blown away when she visits the bustling, exciting kingdom. Our longhaired heroine is so ecstatic to be out and about that she can’t resist the temptation to dance. Her infectious spirit quickly attracts the entire kingdom, including Flynn Rider. As Flynn stated earlier, he doesn’t sing and it’s safe to say he doesn’t dance either. After seeing how much fun Rapunzel is having, though, his cynicism melts away. Since the dance is so crowded, our leads have a hard time coming together. As the music continues to build, however, they finally end up in each other’s arms. Energetic, stirring, and beautifully animated, this scene is like dancing on sunshine.

In addition to revisiting traditional animation, “The Princess and the Frog” also marked Disney’s first fully animated musical in several years. Of course what is music without a little dance? On a quest to reverse the curse that turned them into frogs, Tiana and Prince Naveen take a break under the sparkling night sky. Being a workaholic, Tiana could never find the time to learn how to dance. With Naveen as her partner, though, she doesn’t slip up. Leaping from lily pad to lily pad, their dance comes complete with a gorgeous environment and a sincere love ballad. This lovely scene took us all back to Disney’s glory days, filling the audience with the sentiment of romance and nostalgia.

Following an uncomfortable dance with the slimy Duke of Weselton, Princess Anna shares a good laugh with the newly crowned Queen Elsa. The two briefly reconnect, but Elsa ultimately gives her sister the cold shoulder. As Anna is driven away, she finds herself growing closer to the charming Prince Hans. Singing an infectious Disney love song, the couple find themselves dancing through the night. Hans concludes the evening with a proposal, which Anna eagerly accepts. Although her decision might be crazy, the audience can identify with Anna’s impulsive behavior. Having been shunned for years, it makes sense that she would be enamored after just one dance. Throughout her journey, however, Anna comes to realize what true love really means.

After the gang accidentally switches Buzz Lightyear to Spanish mode, he begins to act less like a space ranger and more like a telenovela star. Buzz eventually snaps out of it, but there’s still a little Spaniard left in him. When Jessie plays the Spanish version of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” Buzz’s feet begin to take over. Unable to control himself, he decides to just go with the flow. To choreograph this paso doble dance, the filmmakers turned to Cheryl Burke and Tony Dovolani of “Dancing with the Stars.” The final product was not only romantic, but also one of the comedic highlights from “Toy Story 3.” What more can be said accept, “Hay un amigo en mí.”

As the world’s biggest fan of “Hello, Dolly,” WALL-E has developed a fondness for music and dance. This little robot wants nothing more than to join hands with a dance partner. WALL-E gets his wish upon encountering a robot named EVE, who he follows beyond the stars. In perhaps the film’s most beautiful moment, our artificial lovers come together in outer space. Soaring around the Axiom, the two robots not only defy gravity, but also define dancing. Their speed and rhythm match harmoniously with Thomas Newman’s musical score, which captures the majesty of our universe and the sensation of falling in love. Using little dialogue, “WALL-E” primarily tells its story through body – or should we say, robot - language. This uplifting scene is a key example.
