The most romantic "Big Bang Theory" moments prove that there is a science to love. Our countdown includes Sheldon gets Amy back, the star necklace, Penny's box of memories, and more!

#10: Sheldon Gets Amy Back
"The Earworm Reverberation"

Top 10 Penny & Sheldon Moments on The Big Bang Theory

Sheldon spends this whole episode trying to figure out a song that’s stuck in his head. When he’s finally able to pull the earworm out of its hole, he realizes that the lyrics to the song perfectly represent the importance that Amy is in his life. Sheldon had avoided getting back together with Amy in the past because of how hard it had been to get over her. But in that moment that didn’t matter. All that mattered was getting her back. So, he marches right over to her apartment and tells her that she is his heartworm - it sounds bad, but trust us when we say it’s really sweet and romantic.

#9: Raj Goes "Love Actually" on Anu
"The Propagation Proposition"

Also in:

Top 10 Penny & Leonard Moments on The Big Bang Theory

If anyone was going to try and win back a girl using something from a romantic comedy film, it was definitely going to be Raj. He probably considered holding a boombox over his head, but instead he goes with the “Love Actually” cue cards. The reference is lost on Anu - who never got any of his romcom references. But even she can’t ignore the sweet romance in the gesture. Although, it eventually takes a heartfelt speech and a cute final card to finally get her to agree to try again.

#8: First Time Sheldon & Amy Say ‘I Love You’
"The Prom Equivalency"

Also in:

Top 20 Sheldon & Amy Moments on The Big Bang Theory

When the girls decide to put on a prom, Sheldon gets overwhelmed by the perceived pressures and coital assumptions that come with such an event. This leads to him having a panic attack and Amy having to reassure him that she just wants to dance with him and have a nice evening. She also picks this moment to tell him she loves him for the first time. But Sheldon, in an emotional revelation that we generally don’t see from him, tells her first. This wasn’t the first surprise “I love you” on the show though. That honor goes to Penny who, in a heated moment, accidentally let the words slip out. The words that Leonard, and fans, had been waiting years to hear.

#7: The Star Necklace
"The Countdown Reflection"

Top 20 The Big Bang Theory Moments That Made Us Happy Cry

If movies, TV and the diamond industry have taught us anything it’s that giving a woman the gift of jewelry is a very romantic thing to do. However, Howard took that basic premise and upped the romance factor by about 1000 when he gives Bernadette a star necklace just days before heading off to the International Space Center. Sure, on its own it’s a pretty necklace. But then he tells her that he’s going to take the necklace with him on his trip so that when he returns she’ll have a star that has actually been in space. Well, that romance is just, excuse the pun, out of this world.

#6: Raj's Library Date
"The Contractual Obligation Implementation"

Also in:

Top 10 Most Relatable The Big Bang Theory Moments

When we first met the guys on the show they were all pretty shy around the opposite sex. Well, except for Howard, who overcompensated by being a little too, shall we say, creepy. But none of them were more awkward around women then Raj, who, for years, couldn’t even talk to them without being drunk. So, when he meets Lucy, he;s very sympathetic to her extreme social anxiety and does all he can to make her feel comfortable. And the most romantic thing he does with that in mind is his library texting date. The idea is uber-sweet, and tailored so specifically to Lucy, showing just how much Raj cares and understands how she feels.

#5: Penny’s Box of Memories
"The Romance Resonance"

Also in:

Top 20 Penny & Leonard Moments on The Big Bang Theory

In an attempt to show Leonard that she can also be romantic, Penny puts a lot of thought into his Valentine's Day gift. But while very thoughtful, as we’ll see later on, it doesn’t quite work out. However, this considerate oopsie leads to one of the most romantic moments of the series, when she shows Leonard a box filled with mementos of his many loving gestures. For someone not prone to nostalgia and romantic gestures, the fact that she kept all those things speaks volumes about how she has always felt about Leonard.

#4: Leonard Proposes With a Ring
"The Gorilla Dissolution"

Also in:

Top 10 Times Leonard was the Best Big Bang Theory Character

From that very first episode when Leonard told Sheldon that he and Penny would have smart and beautiful kids, we had been waiting for the moment when these two would get engaged. However, when it finally happened, the moment is, to quote Leonard himself, “a little anticlimactic.” But have no fear folks, the romance ninja is here to save the romantic day! Leonard reaches into his wallet, breaks out a ring, gets down on one knee and proposes properly. It’s hard to tell who is happier with the engagement, Penny and Leonard or the live audience.

#3: Sheldon Proposes
"The Long Distance Dissonance"

Also in:

Top 10 Memorable Amy & Sheldon Moments

Leonard’s proposal is romantic, but Penny was right there, and he only had to travel a few feet to get down on his knee. Sheldon, on the other hand, had to travel across the country for his. And just like how the earworm had been the catalyst to him getting Amy back, this time it was a kiss from another girl that propelled him thousands of miles, and onto his knee, at Amy’s door. What makes the moment even better is that we, the audience, didn’t know what he was going to do until he did it. We didn’t even know where he was going until we heard the three knocks on Amy’s door.

#2: The Frozen Snowflake
"The Electric Can Opener Fluctuation"

Also in:

Top 10 The Big Bang Theory Moments That Didn't Age Well

Leonard has given Penny bigger and more expensive gifts over the years, but none were more romantic than this one. While Howard couldn’t, for obvious reasons, give Bernadette a real star from space, Leonard could give Penny an actual snowflake from the North Pole. And he does. The romance ninja even makes sure to preserve the snowflake in a special solution so that it would last forever - like his love for Penny. He didn’t actually say that last part, but in our hearts and minds it was totally implied. Don’t you agree?

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

Amy Gets Jewelry, “The Shiny Trinket Maneuver”
The Greatest Reaction to Any Gift, Ever

Penny's Valentine's Day Effort, "The Romance Resonance"
Yes, Leonard Already Has the Book, but Penny Truly Tries

Sheldon & Amy's First Kiss, "The Locomotive Manipulation"
Valentine’s Day Dinner on a Train Leads to a Kiss

Leonard Buys Penny a Car, "The Friendship Turbulence"
He Shows That He Supports Her Dreams

Sheldon's Spider-Man Speech, “The Date Night Variable”
Spider-Man Saves the Day Again

#1: Howard's Song for Bernadette
"The Romance Resonance"

Also in:

Top 10 Best Howard & Bernadette Moments on The Big Bang Theory

Howard’s star necklace came up short to Leonard’s snowflake on our list. However, Mr. Wolowitz pulled ahead of everyone and into the number one spot with the song he wrote for Bernadette on the anniversary of their first date. Things don’t quite go as planned when an accident at work forces Bernadette into quarantine. But Howard brings his keyboard and his backup singers to the hospital, and sings her a song that is both super romantic and super catchy. It makes Bernadette cry, and we aren’t afraid to admit it has us tearing up as well!
