“Made in Abyss” (2017)
How do you make your villain instantly hateable in just one episode? Have him experiment on children of course! An infamous White Whistle, Bondrewd was obsessed with testing the effect of the Abyss on live subjects, most of which just happened to be orphans; Nanachi and Mitty included. During a flashback that explored the origins of everyone’s favourite Hollow, we see in painful detail how Nanachi and Mitty gained their inhuman forms. They were dropped to the lowest level and then raised up instantly, kicking the Abyss’ curse into immediate effect. While Nanachi just gets fluffier, Mitty is reduced to a bubbling mess of flesh and agony. Does Bondrewd care? Of course not.

“Fate/Zero” (2011-12)
Out of all the Servants to ever take part in the Holy Grail War, the award for creepiest SOB definitely goes to Caster, or as he was known in his time; Gilles de Rais. Insane in the membrane and with the power to summon all kinds of tendrilled monstrosities, Caster enjoyed nothing more than kidnapping and torturing children before displaying them like works of art. Good thing his Master Ryuunosuke shares the same interests! Being demented is one thing, but when you get your kicks from tearing innocent children apart, then you’ve crossed a very dark line.

“Hellsing Ultimate” (2006-12)
In case you didn’t know, the Major loves war. So much so that his final goal is to be consumed by it, but not before he burns everything to ashes along the way. With an army of Nazi vampires at his disposal, he succeeds in burning London to the ground all the while slaughtering millions of innocent citizens. It’s hard to tell if this guy really is a military genius or his madness is just all encompassing, because he damn well succeeds in his mission.

“Inuyashiki” (2017)
He may look like an average student, but underneath that teenage façade is a truly frightening sociopath. After finding himself turned into a cyborg due to the aftermath of an extra-terrestrial explosion, Hiro Shishigami one day decides to randomly walk into a house and murder the occupants. What’s truly unsettling isn’t just how he casually kills a couple and lets their child drown, but rather how he shows no emotion. This slaughter is made infinitely creepier when he tries to strike up conversation about One Piece with the sole surviving daughter. What a lunatic.

“Fullmetal Alchemist” series (2003-10)
His appearance may be brief, but Shou Tucker’s impact on this legendary series was huge, as it once again revealed to the Elric brother just how dangerous the art of alchemy can be. Desperate to retain his State Alchemist’s license, Tucker finally manages to create a sentient Chimera. There’s just one problem, in order to do so he fused his own daughter with her dog. The fact he’s so proud of his actions just makes the whole thing even more upsetting. He more than earned that automail punch to the face.

“Erased” (2016)
No matter which point in time Revival takes you to, this guy will always be one of anime’s most sadistic serial killers. As Satoru traverses back to his elementary school days in order to prevent the murder of his classmates, the killer is slowly revealed to be none other than his homeroom teacher. Fascinated with the killing of children, Yashiro’s heinous acts have led to the deaths of dozens, most of whom were his own pupils. Methodical in nature and merciless in execution, the acts of this madman are one thing that time can’t erase from our memories.

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10)
Formally known as the Dwraf in the Flask, the original homunculus is a being of pure sin with one hell of a silver tongue. After befriending and tricking the likes of Van Hohenheim, he managed to trick both he and the King of Xerxes into creating a giant transmutation circle, and as a result wiped out an entire civilization in the blink of an eye. Following on from this, he would go on to bare the seven Homonculi we all know and fear. Good thing a certain tiny alchemist managed to set him straight by smashing him right in his Philosopher’s Stone.

“Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ” (1986-87)
Remember how “ZZ” was originally way more light-hearted than its predecessors? Well, this scene certainly took it back to its bloodier roots. In order to demonstrate the might of Neo-Zeon’s power, Haman Karn orders an entire colony to be dropped down over Dublin. Despite the intervention of Judau and the Double Zeta Gundam, her plan succeeds. Haman was already one of the franchise’s most complex and intriguing characters, but with this action she easily earned her spot as a true villain. The Irish won’t be happy about this.

“Dragon Ball Z” (1989-96)
Where do we even begin with this guy? In terms of a villainous resume Freiza has pretty much checked every single box. With just a flick of his finger he destroyed Planet Vegeta and almost doomed the Sayain race to extinction. He slaughtered a whole bunch of Namekians just for fun. Has killed plenty of Goku’s allies, including Vegeta and Krillin, and generally is something of a douche. With such a high body count to his name, is it any wonder that everyone’s having a hard time trusting him since he made his return in Dragon Ball Super?

“Berserk” (1997-)
Granted, if we had been imprisoned and spent a whole year being tortured until we were nothing more than a mute cripple, we wouldn’t be in the best mindset either. That being said, fuck you Griffith, you traitorous bastard! After summoning the God Hand, the White Hawk is offered the chance to have his dream fulfilled and gain unlimited power. All he has to do is sacrifice all of his comrades. Does he go through with it? What do you think?! If sentencing his friends to death wasn’t enough, he then proceeds to defile Casca while forcing Guts to watch. That’s just a whole other level of evil.
