There’s got to be something behind those figures, right? Welcome to WatchMojo’s Top 5 Facts! Don’t get us wrong, the purpose of today’s show isn’t to attack the integrity of ghost hunting, or to endorse it, for that matter, it’s just that technically speaking, there’s no scientific method to it. Advocates point to the increasingly advanced technology of the equipment used in ghost hunting as evidence of its legitimacy. But there’s no scientific proof that the instruments used are inherently linked to ghosts. Electromagnetic field detectors, infrared cameras, ultra-sensitive microphones and Geiger counters may unearth odd occurrences at any location, but ghost hunting sceptics will always identify alternative, logical explanations, and therefore label ghost hunting as a ’pseudoscience’. On the other hand, some believers reason that technology isn’t actually advanced enough for ghost hunting yet. Which is why only some of us can sense them, and no definitive, universal proof exists.

In general, ghost hunting is a multi-sensual experience. Though it’s usually practiced under the cover of darkness, there’s a focus on visual indications such as orbs of light. There’s also major importance placed on sound as hunters listen for literal ‘bumps in the night’, while feeling around for unexpected cold spots or breezes, which are considered clear signs of an otherworldly presence. But, some hunters claim that our nose knows most about ghosts. Perfume is an almost ever-present at hunts, even when the hunters aren’t wearing any themselves. And it’s apparently possible to determine exactly what type of ghost you’re getting close to by smelling them; most spirits emit a sweet scent, but malevolent poltergeists give off a whiff of rotten meat.

Lorraine Warren and her late husband Ed have perhaps the most impressive ghost hunting resume outside of Dan Aykroyd and co. The couple are founders of the New England Society for Psychic Research, and they claim to have investigated over 10,000 cases of haunting and paranormal activity during their career. They famously worked on the ‘Amityville Horror’ case, an archetypal haunted house story in New York which has since been adapted for page and screen. They were also involved in investigating Annabelle, a doll possessed by demons, and Bathsheba Sherman, a 19th century witch intent on cursing people into an early grave – both of which have also inspired big-time movies. The Warrens are the ghost hunters of Hollywood.

Supposedly, and not surprisingly, one of the best bets for ghost hunting is the cemetery. The sheer volume of people at rest encourages ghost seekers to graveyards all over. According to GhostHunting101.com, other popular locales include theatres and schools because of the emotional intensity that both those places are host to. Disembodied spirits supposedly find their way to religious structures seeking salvation, making Churches popular ghost hunting sites. Finally, battlefields are prime spectre searching territory. As locations where so many people saw their lives taken so suddenly, the paranormal presence at warzones past and present is reportedly way higher than the average.
