Top 5 Real-Life Zombie Facts

The real world? Been there, done that. Welcome to WatchMojo’s Top 5 Facts. In this instalment, we’re counting down the top five facts about virtual reality. While many have tried to dismiss VR as the next 3D TV (meaning… a failure), virtual reality may very well live up to its full potential and change the world. Based on the many recent impressive developments in this immersive technology, it’s not hard to fathom a near future in which people would rather inhabit virtual worlds than our real one.

#5: Unlike Most New Tech, It’s Relatively Affordable & Accessible

Most new technologies are incredibly expensive when they hit the market, before the rate of production increases and costs decrease, making them more affordable. Just look at DVD players, the first models of which sold for $1000 in 1997, or something called the “VCR” which sold for $1400 in the late '70s. True, you can easily spend a couple grand on a top of the line VR headset right now, but 400 to 700 modern day dollars can get you a mid-range consumer model. Google meanwhile has come out swinging with accessible VR for any budget, thanks to a simple cardboard headset that you slide a smartphone in to experience VR. This sort of accessibility-first thinking will spread the VR experience much faster than any other new tech, even if it's not exactly stylish.

#4: The Pornography Industry Is Quickly Embracing VR

Top 5 Scandalous Myths About the Porn Industry

In our modern online world, many are turning away from the complications of obtaining and maintaining real life sex in favour of porn to satisfy their sexual needs. So, what’s going to happen when virtual reality becomes the new standard format for porno? The process has already begun. Porn has always been an early adopter of new media technologies... it’s an industry always looking to make their content more accessible and more alluring. Picking up where the sock and body lotion left off, many major porn sites have already begun offering immersive, virtual reality porn that puts you in the perspective of the star... or at least the star's faceless male companion. Add in touch-sensitive smart sex toys, and virtual reality porn could very well be the first VR experience to replace the real world equivalent on a large-scale.

#3: Its Potential Is Being Compared to the Internet in the Mid-90s

In the mid-90s, there was an explosion of tech development coming from “Internet companies”, and then… the dot-com bubble burst and a lot of money was lost, leaving many to Ask Jeeves what just happened. While companies came and went, the Internet itself rolled with the punches, having become central to modern civilization. According to venture capitalist Mike Rothenberg, VR is set to have a similarly radical effect, drastically changing how people access and process information. While his company has experienced a financial meltdown of dot-com proportions, that only serves to illustrate his point– such a major overhaul of the tech world is going to be highly profitable, but equally volatile. Goldman Sachs is predicting that VR will be an $80 billion industry by 2025, while Facebook dropped $2 billion to acquire VR company Oculus to get in on the action.

#2: It’s The Future of Gaming, No Matter How Unpopular That Position May Be

Sony Playstation VR, Valve's Vive headset, Oculus Rift - the tech is there. Sadly, developers have yet to produce the first truly successful VR game - VR's "Killer App" - making the expensive technology a hard sell for the average gamer. But it’s better to think of these shortcomings as simple experiments with new technology. In order for VR games to reach their full potential, game designers need to learn what makes for a good, satisfying VR game, as well as how to properly incorporate controls. While a large amount of "must have" titles might not exist yet, the immersive potential of VR, coupled with potential financial opportunities it presents, all but guarantees that VR as being central to the next chapter of video gaming history.

Taking into account not only Virtual Reality, but Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality as well, this technology has the potential to impact every aspect of human life. In terms of entertainment, television and film content is already in development. Augmented Reality glasses aim to eliminate the need for any actual screens in your home, allowing you to simply project virtual ones wherever you choose. Once the content creators catch up to the tech… VR could impact every corner of the tech world. What would your dream VR experience look like?
