Located in the state of Illinois, Chicago is the largest city in Midwestern America. With 2.8 million residents, it is also the third most populous city in the country. Chicago is found on the south-western tip of Lake Michigan. Summer temperatures in Chicago range from the low-sixties Fahrenheit, to the low-eighties – or from the mid-to-high teens Celsius, to the high twenties. The city can experience severe cold spells during winter, but on average temperatures hover around or just below freezing. 1871 saw a fire destroy one third of Chicago, including the entire central business district. This Great Chicago Fire caused the largest construction surge in the country’s history. The restoration of the city also led to Chicago’s nickname, "Second City," as most of the "first city" had been destroyed. The city became a leader in architecture because of the resulting constructions, which included the birth of the skyscraper. Chicago is an important hub of the American Democratic Party, and many prominent politicians have called this city home, including the first African-American president of the United States, Barack Obama. Chicago draws over 44 million visitors annually with its shopping, notable architecture and cultural attractions. The world-famous Sears Tower, Millennium Park, and the city’s countless museums are just a few of the sites that entice tourists to visit Chicago.
