Released in 1992 for the SNES, this go-kart racing game is one of the most popular titles ever released for the home consoles by Nintendo. Mario Kart became instantly popular for its focus on using Mushroom Kingdom weapons and power-ups at high speed, thrilling co-operative play, and intense multiplayer matches. Taking place within 20 different landscapes from Nintendo’s other insanely popular game at the time, “Mario World”, players can team up with, or go head on against a friend by selecting from a roster of eight characters from the Mario series, each with different Kart handling and abilities. Aside from this, Mario Kart even included a time trial mode and one-on-one Match Race Mode for players to compete without the computer. In Battle Mode, players must attack each other with power-ups, which burst their opponents three balloons, while defending their own. Making extensive use of power-ups, players could attain special weapons and abilities by driving over titles marked with question marks. These items include the invincibility of star power, becoming invisible and stealing others items as a Ghost, firing off various turtle shells, and getting speed boosting mushrooms. In addition to this, the game also included advanced maneuvers, such as hopping and power-sliding to help with sudden turns. At the same time, collecting coins increases your top speed, and can be lost by getting hit by the other players. Ranked as one of the best games of all time, it is created with creating the kart-racing sub genre and expanding the Mario Series beyond platformers.
