The woman behind SSSniperWolf is 30-year-old Alia “Lia” Shelesh. Born in Liverpool, England, she and her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona when she was six years old. She graduated from high school early before going to college, first studying pharmacy, then nursing before ultimately dropping out. Shelesh first joined YouTube in 2011, amassing approximately 50,000 subscribers, under the name “sexysexysniper.” However, a new account was created in 2013, SSSniperWolf, named in tribute to a “Metal Gear Solid” boss, Sniper Wolf. In a tweet, she said that “SS doesn’t stand for anything.” Initially, her channel was primarily gaming-focused. As her popularity grew, she began to expand her content to include more personal topics. However, in 2017, she began to focus more on reaction videos. This is a path she’s since continued on, with much of her recent content focused on TikTok videos. At the time of this video’s creation, SSSniperWolf has 34.2 million subscribers on YouTube.

In her time in the YouTube spotlight, SSSniperWolf has courted many controversies. Among the accusations leveled against her are lying, slander, transphobia, and body shaming. She was even accused of ghosting a 10-year-old fan who was dying of cancer. Though these controversies didn’t do anything to slow her momentum in any real way, they did help to create a reputation for SSSniperWolf as something of a drama magnet.

SSSniperWolf has run into some legal challenges. In 2013, before she became a bonafide YouTube celebrity, she was charged with armed robbery after pushing a security guard, and was in jail for a few days. In 2016, she was charged with disorderly conduct following an altercation with her now-estranged husband, fellow YouTuber Evan Young, better known as “Sausage,” who was also arrested. She spent about three days in jail.

JacksFilms is the alias of Jack Douglass, a 35-year-old YouTuber who's been on the platform since 2006. Many of his popular videos are humor-focused, such as commercial parodies. At the time of this video’s creation, his channel has 4.89 million subscribers on Youtube.

In recent years, JacksFilms has been a vocal critic of SSSniperWolf and her content. This began with him publishing a video parodying her and what he perceived as low-effort, stolen content, with Jack negatively reacting to SSSniperWolf’s own reaction videos. He also made a new channel specifically for these parody videos. This wasn’t the first instance of Jack criticizing people making reaction videos. As he’s also called out creators Ray William Johnson and Jinx. The beef soon made its way to Twitter, where Jack called out SSSniperWolf for making videos that largely relied on the content of others without adding much substance. This led to a response from SSSniperWolf and a vicious back-and-forth between the two creators ensued. Jack addressed the controversy further on his main YouTube channel, releasing a video all about SSSniperWolf and her practices. He also argued it exemplified a YouTube culture where unoriginal content was emphasized over original content. He also started using a fan-created bingo card that he’d use to call out common tropes in SSSniperWolf’s videos. Another video brought up further allegations and instances of her making low-quality content.

On October 13, 2023, SSSniperWolf posted a poll on her Instagram story, asking whether she should visit Jack, as she was five minutes away from his home. She also posted a video of herself outside his home. At that time, Jack was streaming, which he ended upon seeing SSSniperWolf’s post. He called her out for doxxing and stalking and implored YouTube to demonetize or otherwise ban her. SSSniperWolf responded to Jack’s claims by saying that he had been harassing her. He refuted this by bringing up her doxxing. He implored YouTube further to ban her. And other YouTubers have also joined in calling her out. At the time of this video’s creation, one sponsor, GFuel, has ended its affiliation with SSSniperWolf. So far, since the incident, SSSniperWolf has made no apology or acknowledgment of wrongdoing. She mocked the doxxing claims in another Instagram story, which she subsequently deleted. In addition to the doxxing scandal, SSSniperWolf is also the defendant in a lawsuit from her estranged husband, Evan Young, claiming breach of contact, among other charges, and his being deliberately excluded from business decisions, as he reportedly did most of the behind-the-scenes work for her YouTube channel.
