Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for Top 10 Must Watch Anime of Spring 2023.
For this list, we’re looking over the best new anime releases from the current season that have struck a chord with fans.
Devoted fans of this high-school rom-com are certainly eating well, because this latest addition to the genre is dazzling. Moving from the country to Tokyo, Mitsumi dreams of having the perfect school experience…with mixed results. Throw in new friends, a new culture, and a delightful new love interest in the form of the laid-back Sosuke, and her days look to be fraught with the best kind of upheavals. With its crisp visuals and hilariously sweet lead, this one has every chance of sneaking up on us as the most adorable of underdogs.
Given how the first part ended, it was obvious what was initially a lighter take on the Gundam formula was about to head into a much darker direction. With the corporations vying for power, Suletta and Mironne’s relationship tested to the limits, not to mention the wicked machinations of Suletta’s mother, we’re expecting a Sunrise bloodbath with this follow-up! Ah, just like old times. Char would be proud.
If there ever was a character that deserved their own spin-off from this crazed fantasy world, it would be Megumin. Set a year before she joins up with Kazuma and his party of hilariously mis-matched misfits, we get to see how Megumin fell in love with explosion magic, the bizarre dynamics she shares with her fellow mages, and what ultimately compelled her to adopt her now infamous dramatic persona. While we’ll miss her interactions with Kazuma, at least YunYun is along for the ride.
Anime’s sweetest and most adorkable married couple have made a grand return, and while there’s certainly a tingling as to the mystery surrounding Tsukasa’s seemingly supernatural origins, the main focus remains the lovey dovey lifestyle between Nasa and his devoted wife. As it should be! Everything these two do together is just so damn wholesome, blending relatability with some sharp humor to keep their romance from turning stale. Honestly, if they ever get a divorce, the concept of love dies with them!
This thing came out of nowhere and subsequently blew us away! Following an event known as the Collapse that seems to have doomed the world, we’re introduced to two groups of characters – a pair of adolescent survivors scouring the remnants of the world in search of literal heaven, as well as a group of students being raised in an unknown facility sealed off from the outside. Oh, and there are horrifying monsters as well. Holy shit – is this the spiritual successor to the Promised Neverland?! Avenge the sins of your forebears Production IG!
From the mad-mind of the mad-lad creator of Kaguya-sama, we’ve got one of the darkest takes on the idol scene we’ve seen in quite a while. After being reincarnated as the son of his favorite idol, a once revered doctor has to protect his new mother figure as she navigates the industry, with the climb to success filled with just as many pitfalls as one would expect. While we’re sure they’ll be a few laughs given the absurdity of it all, this series still has a sinister edge to it that we can’t wait to see expand!
Who needs magic when you’ve got muscles? In a world full of wizards where zero magical talent makes you less than nothing, you’ve got Mash – a guy who can’t cast a spell to save his life, but is so ridiculously strong that he can perform feats that rival any mage. Also, he loves cream puffs. Throw such a ridiculously powerful goofball into anime Hogwarts and what do you get? Hilarity mixed with some outrageous fights! The power levels here promise to be insane, and we can’t wait to see Mash take down every cocky wizard who gets in his way.
Time to take to the seas and find out what brought about humanity’s stone age! Partnering up with the eccentric yet skilled captain Ryusei, Senku and the rest are off to find the source of the petrification and help restart civilization. Though it seems that high tides aren’t the only thing they’re going to have to navigate as some unsavory types have broken free of their stone prisons and are looking to take advantage of their new surroundings. Given that it’s Senku, we’re just awaiting more brilliance for this third outing.
MAPPA does not miss! Yet another new property brimming with bloodied beauty, this time we’re following the journey of death row convict Gabimaru – a shinobi that seemingly cannot be killed by ordinary means, who finds himself given the chance for a peaceful life with his wife. All he has to do is travel to an island filled with supernatural horrors and find the elusive elixir of life. All the while having to deal with other criminals and killers after the same thing. The action so far has been amazing, and we can’t wait to see what sweet, fresh hell awaits Gabimaru as he traverses deeper into the unknown!
Looks like we’ve got another hit on our hands! Following the explosive events of the Entertainment District, Tanjiro and company are on their way to the titular Swordsmith Village in order to, once again, repair their blades. Only for this to get a tad more complicated with the introduction of both the Love and Mist Hashira, not to mention Muzan sending yet another powerful lackey to finish them off for good. By now, we know things are about to get all kinds of brutal, though at least we have Mitsuri and her twin techniques to shake things up a bit this time round!
