10 New Features Excited About in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at the 10 New Features We’re Excited About in “Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga”!

Recently, we managed to get our hands on the upcoming “Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga”, and there were a ton of new features and changes we spotted. A big thank you to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for inviting us to come check the game out before it launches on April 5, 2022!

Will you be picking up “Skywalker Saga” on launch day? What’s got you excited about the game? Share with us in the comments below.

Lego-fied Writing

Granted, this isn’t anything too new, but this is certainly worth mentioning. Previous Lego games based on movies would either pantomime the story, rip audio straight from the movies, or barely change dialogue or change it too much. To set the record straight from our previous “Skywalker Saga” video, the game will not be ripping audio from movies, and the dialogue has been altered primarily to squeeze in that trademark Lego humor and/or shorten lengthy conversations to keep cutscenes as brief as possible. And for let me tell you, it has been a LONG time since a Lego game managed to make me laugh out loud the same way “Skywalker Saga” did in my preview coverage. This is absolutely one of the funniest Lego games I have played!

Character Classes

In the past, Lego games had a tendency to kind of shuffle abilities around with whatever characters made sense. You could have two guys who could shoot targets, but only one of them could fix machines or dig or use the Force. Character abilities have been streamlined through a new character class system to make it easier to play as your favorite characters while getting the job done. There are nine character classes for you to juggle: Jedi, Hero, Scoundrel, Scavenger, Dark Side, Bounty Hunter, Villain, Astromech Droid, and Protocol Droid. Each class has their own skill tree for you to upgrade their abilities, and those upgrades will apply to anyone under that class. Considering the roster is spanning more than three hundred characters, it’s great to see that developer TT Games wants you to spend more time exploring and doing missions rather than grinding for the same things just so your favorite characters are useful.

Kyber Bricks

Now, how does one go about acquiring these upgrades? Well, it’s far easier than one might expect. The usual Gold Bricks, used to access bonus levels and lead up to the completion stud fountain, have now been turned into Kyber Bricks. These bricks can be found throughout the galaxy in asteroids, locked behind puzzles and missions, or simply sitting in hard-to-reach places. Once obtained, you can use these bricks to upgrade character classes, but keep in mind you’ll still need a certain amount of studs in addition to the required number of Kyber bricks. And don’t worry about coming up short on Kyber Bricks - there are over a THOUSAND to collect. Yeah, you’re gonna be busy!

Level Objectives

The main campaign offers plenty of Kyber bricks as well to help speed you through the upgrades. Each level can net you a total of six Kyber bricks. Three of them are tied to the new stud meter, allowing you to earn one Kyber brick for each third of the meter you fill. The other three can be earned through level challenges, which will require combat maneuvers or exploration to achieve. To my surprise, I did not earn any bricks from level challenges during my demo of the game! So, this might prove to be more of a challenge than most Lego games have given before.

Combat

Lego games have never really been super complex. Sure, super meters were added in later games, but it rarely felt like there were stakes or challenges to overcome. “Skywalker Saga’s” combat is looking to turn that ship around! Those preferring gunfights can now utilize the new cover system to blast droids and troopers or throw lightsabers at multiple targets. Melee players, on the other hand, can perform combos with light, heavy, and aerial attacks. AI is improved a bit, too; enemies will try to build cover mid-fight and will occasionally try to counter if you’re using a single attack button too much. Also, dodging is now tied to a single button so you can move out of enemy fire at your own discretion.

Boss Fights

Boss fights have also gotten a bit of an overhaul. Those who have played more recent Lego titles like “The Incredibles” and “DC Super Villains” will notice that the telegraphing for bosses is somewhat the same, but bosses will put up more of a fight this time around. You will have to mix up inputs for attacks to avoid getting countered. On top of that, some bosses may send hordes of enemies after you mid-fight and clash blades with you, putting you in a button-mashing QTE. Needless to say, the pressure will be on.

Puzzles

Puzzles in Lego games have never really been super complicated let alone engaging. Much of it resorted to using character abilities in a specific order or building certain structures in proper places. This time around, puzzles require more player interaction. Access panels come with different minigames and demand a bit more attention than just matching icons and pressing a couple of buttons. Some of them will require you to think outside of the box a bit and feature more than one solution to solve. For example, I saw a Kyber Brick on a ledge on Tatooine. Now, I could have Force lifted C-3PO over to the ledge, but instead, I broke him in half and tossed him to the brick! So, don’t be afraid to experiment and find other methods to get the job done.

Open World Exploration

Now, when you have a game hiding over a thousand collectibles, you can only imagine how big the game must be. Yes, “Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga” is a massive game that will keep you busy long after you play through all nine movies. First off, you have more than twenty planets to explore, and each of those planets have multiple locations to discover. You can even travel outside of the planet to find ships and asteroids hanging around the atmosphere, which can lead to you finding more missions and more Kyber Bricks. Just keep in mind that when you jump to lightspeed, you might be pulled out and ambushed by enemy ships!

Less Destruction, More Progress

One interesting thing I noticed in my time with “Skywalker Saga” is that the levels are designed a bit differently than previous Lego games. And no, we’re not just talking about the camera. Levels felt more focused and evenly paced. Rather than having the player waste precious minutes destroying every brick in sight just to fill a meter, the game rewards you with studs for excelling in quick puzzle solving and building combos in battle. It’s a system that keeps the player on track with progressing in the story instead of trying to destroy every little thing. In other words, this is a more action-oriented Lego game, which should satisfy those longing for a new type of Lego game.

Red Bricks

Now, some of you may be wondering where all the Red Bricks are. Nothing in marketing has said anything on the matter, there’s no sign of it in trailers. So, what could this all mean? Well, Red Bricks are gone, but they aren’t ENTIRELY gone. These collectibles have been replaced with data cards. You’ll be able to find these throughout your adventures across the galaxy, and you’ll be able to access them easily in a menu alongside your characters, vehicles, etc. So, you won’t have to worry about traveling to a specific location just to buy and toggle on these fun little extras. And for the record, yes, Super Gonk and rave party mode are back!
