7 Things You Should Know About Alice: Madness Returns
Prepare to return to American McGee’s psychologically disturbing re-imagining of Wonderland! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll explore everything you should know about “Alice: Madness Returns”, by Spicy Horse and Electronic Arts.
The highly anticipated sequel to 2000’s cult-hit PC game adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s classic Victorian novel, Madness Returns takes place over a decade since we last saw Alice.
As the game begins, we learn that Alice has been released from the Rutledge Insane Asylum and placed into an orphanage. Thought to be cured she soon relapses, venturing back to Wonderland, which quickly becomes warped by her insanity.
Plagued by survivor’s guilt, Alice must search her mind for clues to who or what caused the fire that killed her parents.
Split between Victorian England and Wonderland, players will now have the chance to explore two different, yet equally dark worlds for answers.
This means that while you will spend the vast majority of your time platforming through Alice’s bizarre imagination, you’ll also wander the streets of England. There, you’ll have to interact with characters and find answers that will help you unlock buried memories.
However, you’ll quickly discover that Wonderland is a massive world, with six distinct domains, each with their own set of enemies and challenges.
Taking cues from the iconic novel itself, Alice will once again encounter famous characters, such as the all-knowing Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter. These odd personalities will either help you, or hinder your progress.
With Alice casting herself once again as a twisted superhero within Wonderland, Madness Returns is much more than just another puzzle-filled platformer. In fact, the game incorporates a thrilling and brutal combat system. This focuses on ultra-violent attacks, and the need to master special items and abilities to surpass anything that stands in your way.
Chock full of violent encounters, players must wield several weapons on their quest. Of course, these have been inspired by the classic English tale that the game is based on.
These include Alice’ “Vorpal Blade”, “Hobbyhorse” sledgehammer, clockwork bomb, teapot gun, which shoots big balls of explosive green goop, and her giant Pepper grinder, which shoots like a machine gun.
Similarly, Alice must also equip defensive tools, which include her fireball-reflecting umbrella.
In addition to using these tools against enemies, players must master Alice’s double jump and Butterfly glide to navigate the terrain and shoot disembodied pig snouts. Doing so will reveal hidden areas, items and collectables. These include rose buds, that restore health, and teeth are used as currency to purchase weapon upgrades.
Inspired by the original story, a major part of the adventure will be Alice’s ability to change in size.
Very early on you will discover the Shrink Flower. Not only will this come in handy when trying to access areas, but it enables Alice to see the world differently. From this vantage point, she can spot clues, see direction-pointing arrows and helpful drawings hidden throughout the land.
On the other hand, eating cake will cause Alice to grow larger in size. This is useful for defeating the games more difficult foes.
Aside from the many grotesque enemies that Alice must face, she will go head to head with several terrifying bosses. With each victory, Alice will discover another clue to her past. Unlike the previous game, these confrontations will split her back and forth between real-world London and Wonderland, as she fights for control of her mind and body.
For those that pick up a new copy of the game, they will find a one-time code to download the original 2000 classic “American McGee’s Alice.” This cult-classic was originally a computer exclusive, but has finally been ported to the consoles. Those who prefer to pick up the game used will have to shell out the extra cash to download the special bonus.
Available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, “Alice: Madness Returns” will please older gamers, fans of the original, and anyone craving a violent mystery centered on the loss of sanity.
