Another Top 10 Shocking Red Carpet Outfits
#10: Kim Kardashian
2019 Hollywood Beauty Awards
Little was left to the imagination when Kim Kardashian trotted out this little black number in early 2019. The cut-out dress was designed by French fashion designer Thierry Mugler, who’s worked with some of the biggest names in the fashion and entertainment industries over the years. Kim K wore the head-turning dress to the Hollywood Beauty Awards, an event that “recognizes the architects of beauty in hair, makeup, photography and styling in Film, TV and Music.” Between the bold cut-outs and the high slit, we think it’s safe to say this red-carpet outfit was more than a little shocking.
#9: Mel B
“America’s Got Talent” Season 12 Live Show
Is it really that shocking to see a woman whose nickname is Scary Spice wearing an outfit like this? Singer and former “America’s Got Talent” judge Mel B wore this shocking outfit to the “America’s Got Talent” Season 12 live show back in 2017; and something tells us she’s still regretting her decision to do so to this day. The outfit, which is the definition of “skin-tight”, is a bedazzled catsuit that is simultaneously too much and too little. Sheer material exposes most of Mel B’s body, with strategically placed jewels covering up her intimate areas. Mel B is known for pushing the boundaries of fashion, but this unflattering getup deserves to be relegated to the scrap heap of history.
#8: Poppy
“46th Annual American Music Awards” (2018)
Jane-of-all-trades Moriah Rose Pereira, aka Poppy, rose to prominence on YouTube as a singer and actress, but has since branched out into modelling. The fashion-forward star always dresses to impress and at the 2018 American Music Awards she rocked up in a seriously bold statement. Decked out in a furry pink dress, black face mask, black leggings, and black shoes, Poppy look was reminiscent of, well, nobody. The outfit was totally unique, and had people simultaneously shaking their heads in confusion and clapping for Poppy’s confident fashion statement. Was it political? Did she have a cold sore? Your guess is as good as ours. One thing’s for sure though, Poppy’s getup was easily one of the night’s most shocking.
#7: Amber Rose
“31st MTV Video Music Awards” (2014)
Dressed in what amounts to little more than a bikini, model Amber Rose certainly made a shocking fashion statement with this little number. The Philadelphia native decided to leave very little to the imagination when she stepped onto the red carpet at the 2014 MTV Music Awards in this metallic getup, which showed off plenty of her, uh, assets. The look was reminiscent of the one sported by Rose McGowan at the 1998 iteration of the show, though we’re having trouble deciding which one was more scandalous. Okay, it was McGowan’s, but still, Amber Rose gave her a run for her money!
#6: Lady Gaga
“53rd Annual Grammy Awards” (2011)
Now this is how you make an entrance! Lady Gaga showed up to the 2011 Grammy’s the only way she knew how: encased inside of an egg being carried by four half-naked men. The stunt, which was unsurprisingly the talk of the red carpet, was all part of the marketing campaign for Gaga’s single “Born This Way.” Despite the whole “stuck inside of an egg” thing, Gaga still managed to give an interview to Ryan Seacrest, though we’re not sure how much he actually managed to comprehend. Gaga finally emerged from her shell once she was safely inside the venue, no doubt leaving more than a few people on the outside thoroughly confused.
#5: Bleona Qereti
“42nd Annual American Music Awards” (2014)
Singer/actress Bleona Qereti stole the show at the 2014 American Music Awards… on the red carpet that is. The Albanian-American artist arrived wearing a see-through mesh dress that exposed every inch of her curvaceous body, with a thong and a couple of pasties the only thing standing between her and full-on public nudity. If the goal was to have everyone in the entertainment industry talking about her, we’d say she succeeded. It would appear that confidence is one trait that Bleona Qereti has in spades. Okay, maybe a little too much confidence.
#4: Nicki Minaj
“54th Annual Grammy Awards” (2012)
Shocking doesn’t quite do this stunt justice. Nicki Minaj absolutely crushed the red carpet at the 2012 Grammy’s by doing the unthinkable: she brought the Pope as her date. Okay, it was just a guy in a Pope costume, but still, crazy. Her religious arm-candy was funny and all, but can we take a moment to talk about her outfit? Designed by the indomitable Gianni Versace, Minaj’s outfit looked to be inspired by the ones worn by the Monty Python boys in their famous "The Spanish Inquisition" sketch. The thick, heavy material draped over Minaj in layers, exposing only her face and hair. It made for a truly incredible, if somewhat shocking look. One that won’t soon be forgotten.
#3: Ezra Miller
71st Met Gala (2019)
Ezra Miller is no stranger when it comes to making bold fashion statements. He memorably showed up to the "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" premier wearing black lipstick and a floor length black dress that appeared to be made from recycled winter coats. However, the outfit he rocked at the 2019 Met Gala, which included red lipstick, a pinstripe suit and a bedazzled corset, upped the ante in the shock department. The theme of that year’s event was “campiness,” so Miller and makeup artist Mimi Choi decided to lean into it heavily. Miller’s face was adorned with multiple sets of eyes, creating a look that was both wicked cool and totally outrageous. Hey, Mimi Choi, when Halloween rolls around, can you do our makeup?
#2: Joy Villa
“61st Annual Grammy Awards” (2019)
Red carpet outfits don’t get much more political than this. Outspoken singer-songwriter Joy Villa has been a vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump and his policies for years, including his highly controversial campaign promise to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico. To hammer home her political stance, Villa decided to sport a border wall theme dress to the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, complete with faux-barbed wire around her shoulders and a handbag that read “Make America Great Again.” Variety dubbed the look “conservative couture,” but frankly, this outfit leaves us at a loss for words.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

#1 Jared Leto
71st Met Gala (2019)
Is there anything Jared Leto can’t do? Acting, singing, modelling. The guy is the definition of a triple threat. Well, you can now add red carpet shocker to his sterling resume. The Oscar winner showed up to the 2019 Met Gala with a truly unique accessory: his own decapitated head! The fake Leto head reportedly took six months to make and served as macabre addition to the rest of the artists’ outfit. Despite this, Leto managed to keep things lighthearted, going so far as to use the head as a soccer ball at one point. Nothing says shocking quite like bringing your own decapitated head to the Met Gala.
