10 Best Superhero Games of the Last 10 Years

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at the best superhero video games to release since 2014!

“Lego DC Super-Villains” (2018)

While the story of this Lego installment mostly focused on the villains, that doesn’t change the fact that it deserves to be included. You’ll find the same charming design and easy-to-pick-up gameplay as found in previous games. But the story creatively had players customize their own villain, teaming up with the likes of Joker, Lex Luthor, Sinestro, and many other Justice League rogues. With the heroic team replaced by evil imposters, it fell to the villains to save the day. Like most other Lego games, “DC Super-Villains” is a lighthearted romp that comedically showcases the vast potential of its IP. And it's plenty fun to play whether alone or in co-op.

“Marvel’s Midnight Suns” (2022)

It seems that once “Midnight Suns” was announced to be a tactics game, most players lost interest. And that’s a shame, because developer Firaxis clearly knows its stuff. Like “DC Super-Villains,” players create a customizable hero who teams up with titans of the Marvel universe, including Wolverine, Iron Man, and Scarlet Witch, as well as some lesser known heroes like Nico Minoru and Magik. Drawing from its work on the “XCOM” series, with a little bit of deck-building mechanics mixed in, Firaxis delivered a well-balanced, but addictive combat experience. That’s not to mention excellent voice work from performers seasoned in their roles, such as Steve Blum as Wolverine and Yuri Lowenthal as Spider-Man.

“Infamous Second Son” (2014)

Just making our cut off date, and reminding us that it’s been far too long since we got an “Infamous” game, “Second Son” is a great entry in SuckerPunch’s original superhero series. It follows new protagonist Delsin Rowe, one of the last remaining Conduits on Earth following the climax of “Infamous 2.” The studio crafted an impressive open world, both from a visual and mechanical standpoint. With every new power Delsin gains, the player unlocks a new way to interact with Seattle, as destructively as they see fit. Gameplay is King here; it’s extremely easy to just get lost, blasting your way around the city.

“Batman: The Enemy Within” (2017)

Telltale’s original “Batman” game was a unique take on the caped crusader, but ultimately didn’t rise above mediocre. Thankfully, its sequel was a fair bit stronger. It follows Batman infiltrating a shadowy group of villains called The Pact, which includes many members of his famous rogues gallery. The studio’s formula, a combination of excruciating decision making and wonderful character writing, worked wonders here. Particularly, they managed to take the Joker, by far the most adapted Batman villain, and find an interesting new angle with him through your choices. Telltale may have shot itself in the foot with all its expensive licenses, but its work on “The Enemy Within” is arguably some of its best.

“South Park: The Fractured But Whole” (2017)

As silly as it may be, Ubisoft’s time with these foul-mouthed children resulted in one of the best superhero games of the decade. As the new kid in town, you get wrapped up in a make-believe superhero turf war between all the other children. But, fitting completely with the show it adapts, it escalates to absurd degrees, where you end up fighting crime families, monsters, and even Morgan Freeman. You can feel the love put into it, primarily because creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone worked on it in a number of roles, including writing and voicing most of the characters. So yeah, it’s true to its nature and humor. But it’s also just a well-built RPG.

“Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” (2021)

The MCU version of the team is understandably treasured, so we don’t say this lightly: the dynamic of them here is just as strong, if not better in some instances. It picks up on the group, barreling and smashing their way around the galaxy, when they accidentally release an all-powerful, highly destructive being called Magus. Naturally, responsibility and self-growth are big themes in the game. This is shown beautifully in Peter Quill’s arc, but also cleverly plays into the gameplay. Instead of picking a Guardian to control, we play as Quill and give orders to teammates in combat. This adds a bit of strategy to the action, as you have to use the proper ability of the proper member at the right time.

“Batman: Arkham Knight” (2015)

It’s not every day a trilogy ends on such a high note. With Scarecrow terrorizing Gotham with the help of the new Arkham Knight, we took a severely traumatized Bruce through an explosive climax. Though shortcomings like an overreliance on the Batmobile and the obvious Jason Todd twist have been well documented, Rocksteady still delivered in nearly every category. Bruce was still a powerhouse to control, whether meeting a group of brutes head-on or stealthily picking them off one by one. Visually and technically, it was an undeniable improvement over its predecessor, 2011’s “Arkham City,” due to releasing on a newer generation of consoles. While “City” remains the favorite for most fans, “Knight” certainly deserves respect.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge” (2022)

For a long time, it seemed like “TMNT” games had peaked in 1991 with “Turtles in Time.” But then a beautiful thing happened, when Tribute Games blended everything great about the arcade classic with modern improvements and quality-of-life changes. “Shredder’s Revenge” has enough retro flair and love for the turtles to bring a smile to any diehard fan’s face. Beyond that, it’s also one of the best beat ‘em ups in ages. Every character controls like a dream, with the nice addition of upgrades to each of them as you play. The soundtrack is reminiscent of the classic 80s series, and crisp visuals, lovely animations, and lively level design all make it a treat for the eyes.

“Injustice 2” (2017)

Unsurprisingly, NetherRealm followed up its work on 2013’s “Injustice” with an even stronger sequel. The single player campaign continued its look at the alternate universe, with Batman freeing Superman to stop a greater threat led by Brainiac. Once again, the unique spin on these heroes and their allegiances was captivating. But clearly, having godlike characters in the palm of your hands, able to unleash their powers on your opponents, was what we really came for. With an expanded roster that included newcomers Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Gorilla Grodd, Poison Ivy, as well as the Ninja Turtles and Hellboy as DLC, there were a lot of glorious match ups to play out. Plus, with tweaks to combat mechanics and a wealth of content, it’s a joy to play.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” (2023)

Beginning with its 2018 original, Insomniac have consistently worked on perfecting their “Spider-Man” experience. And each time, we’re surprised by how the studio manages to keep raising the bar. “Spider-Man 2” feels remarkably good to play, from every web swing to every wind current to every punch delivered squarely to a bad guy’s face, primarily due to its stellar use of the DualSense controller. Insomniac is incredible when it comes to giving us satisfying mechanics, looped in through impressive set pieces. From the riveting Sandman opening, through Peter’s dark turn, all the way up to the climax with Venom, it delivers an engaging superhero narrative with plenty of spectacle to boot.
