Biggest-Reveals-About-Joker-Folie-à-Deux

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re highlighting the biggest reveals and rumors about “Joker Folie-à-Deux”.

Send In More Clowns

Arthur Fleck accidentally kicked off a dark revolution in the 2019 film. After the news broke that he fatally shot businessmen while wearing clown makeup, certain Gothamites imitated his look. By the end of the film, the city was full of wannabe Jokers that were ready to burn the city down to ashes. This grim movement seems to be alive and kicking in the sequel as well. At several points in the trailer, we can spot people proudly sporting clown masks or full faces of makeup. They also hinted at a tense scene where Arthur Fleck will be chased by someone who clearly spent a lot of time perfecting their Joker cosplay. How will these chaotic clowns affect the plot? While we know more than a few people will petition for Fleck’s freedom from Arkham Asylum, we have a feeling a few devoted fans will take more drastic measures to help him. The 2019 movie featured several instances where clowns indirectly or directly helped Fleck escape. There’s a good chance that a few ambitious people will journey to the asylum to break him out. At the same time, there’s always the possibility that one of the false clowns might want to take Fleck out to usurp his role. No matter what happens next, it’s undeniable that Fleck started a movement that shows no signs of slowing down.

A Joker Jukebox Musical

When it was first announced that the “Joker” sequel would be a musical, more than a few people thought that the studio was pranking them. However, Lady Gaga’s casting and several follow up statements confirmed that we would see the clown prince of crime perform a few numbers. The only question that remained was whether or not Arthur Fleck wrote original jokes and songs. According to reports, “Folie-à-Deux” will feature over a dozen covers of familiar tracks. There might also be room for a brand new number or two. Based on this information, we wouldn’t be surprised if Lady Gaga unveiled a new song while Gotham burns in the background. As of April 2024, it’s confirmed that we’ll definitely hear a take on “That’s Entertainment” from the musical “The Band Wagon”. Since that song famously featured four singers, it’s possible that the duo may recruit two followers to help them pull it off. It would be fun to see two of Joker’s henchmen or a pair of Harley’s hyenas step into the spotlight for this number and more.

Harley Quinn Loses Her Medical License

While the story of Joker and Harley’s twisted relationship has been told slightly differently in various mediums, a few details have remained consistent. The trailer follows tradition by having the duo meet in Arkham and making sure they both adopt clown makeup. But the biggest departure from the status quo seems to be Harley’s career. In nearly every version of her story, she meets Joker while working in Arkham Asylum as a psychiatrist. Shortly after Harley is assigned to work with the clown prince of crime, she falls in love with him. She eventually proves her commitment to the Joker by helping him escape from Arkham. “Joker Folie-à-Deux” seems to be rewriting this history by making Harley a resident of the asylum instead of a doctor. At this point, it’s unknown if she lost or even had a medical license before the events of the film. It’s also questionable if having them meeting as equals will change their overall dynamic. All we know for sure is that we’ve never seen a Harley Quinn quite like this before.

A Riskier Budget

The first solo Joker film was a gamble that definitely paid off for Warner Bros. By making over a billion dollars at the box office, the 2019 movie became the highest grossing R-rated film ever. That statistic becomes even more impressive when you consider that the movie cost around $50-70 million dollars. After taking those strong numbers into consideration, executives decided to put a lot more money into the sequel. “Folie-à-Deux” has a reported budget of $200 million dollars. To put that number in perspective, “Dune 2” created all of its ships, shields, and sand worms on roughly the same budget. It’s possible that musical rights or ambitious setpieces could have be responsible for “Folie-à-Deux’s” high price tag But whether the Joker rides his own CGI sandworm around Gotham or not, he’ll still have to overcome superhero fatigue. A majority of both Marvel and DC’s films didn’t make more than 500 million dollars at the box office in 2023. “Folie-à-Deux” will have to have to overcome audience apathy and its massive budget if it wants to become a big success story.

You Can’t Believe Your Eyes

Fans of the 2019 movie already know that Arthur Fleck is an unreliable narrator. There were multiple instances where he confused reality with fantasy. In one shocking reveal, we learned the onscreen relationship we saw between Arthur and his neighbor Sophie was all in his head. The “Folie-à-Deux” trailer left multiple hints that he will continue to be an unreliable narrator.
After black umbrellas clearly change colors, Joker and Harley’s names appear on a big digital sign on a familiar looking tv set. Based on the distinct curtains and size of the stage, this is the same set that Murray Franklin used in the first film. Since Arthur killed the host the last time he was there, we highly doubt the studio would welcome him back with open arms. There’s also a scene where Joker is staging a wedding with his former coworker Gary as his witness. The last time they were in a room together, Arthur murdered someone in cold blood. We don’t think Gary would RSVP to a real or imagined wedding after that. These scenes and other small details prove that we can’t take anything at face value. By the time the credits roll, we still might be questioning if anything Arthur experienced was ever real.
