Discover The Islands of New Zealand

Discover The Islands of New Zealand
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
New Zealand is an island country, consisting mainly of the North and South Islands. However, there are numerous smaller islands surrounding the main land masses which make up a charming part of the country. The majority of the country's population lives on the North Island, while the South Island is the larger of the two, and houses such attractions as Mount Cook and Queenstown. After the North and South Islands, New Zealand's largest island is Stewart. In this video, http://www.WatchMojo.com learns more about these and the other islands that make up New Zealand.
New Zealand is an island country, consisting mainly of the North and South Islands. However, there are numerous smaller islands surrounding the main land masses which make up a charming part of the country.

The North Island is the world’s 14th-largest island, and is where more than three-quarters of Kiwis call home. The country’s two most important cities, the capital: Wellington, as well as the biggest city: Auckland, are both found on this island.

The South Island is often called, “the mainland,” despite the fact that only one quarter of the entire country’s population lives there. It is the larger of the two main islands, and houses such attractions as Mount Cook and Queenstown.

After the North and South Islands, New Zealand’s largest island is Stewart. This island is known to the Maoris as Rakiura, which means “the land of the glowing skies.” This name likely refers to the aurora australis, which is a wonder that occurs in the southern sky. Stewart Island is committed to the protection of wildlife, and about 85 per cent of the island is a national park.

White Island is one of New Zealand’s most active volcanic sites. White Island actually refers to two islands off New Zealand’s coast. Because of the area’s history of volcanic activity, there is practically no flora on the island. White Island is unpopulated, but still a famous landmark.

The Bay of Islands is found in the north of North Island. Much like the rest of the country’s islands, this inlet is best discovered via kayak, cruise or yacht. The Bay is one of the most popular sailing and fishing locations in all of New Zealand, and is also a natural harbor.

All it takes is a kayak, ferry, chartered boat or cruise ship to explore the wonderful islands that make up New Zealand.
