Located in Asia, Hong Kong is a territory that is administered by China. In addition to the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and Outlying Islands, it also consists of Hong Kong Island in the south.

Hong Kong Island is the part of Hong Kong that is most shaped by the territory’s former status as a British Colony. This is made evident by the presence of both historical British buildings and more modern skyscrapers.

Two examples of British-style architecture include Murray House and Flagstaff house. We also see the Church of England’s influence in Hong Kong’s Anglican church known as St. John’s Cathedral. As the home of commercial buildings like the Bank of China Tower, the Lippo Centre, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and Exchange Square, it is easy to why the Island is also Hong Kong’s financial center.

Some of the island’s other attractions include the floating village of Aberdeen and Victoria Peak. Be sure to take the Peak Tram through the island’s Central business district, all the way to the top of the mountain. At the peak, you’ll be able to take in a gorgeous view and do some shopping at Peak Tower. You can also pay a visit to the Madame Tussauds Hong Kong wax museum!

While Hong Kong has an efficient public transportation system which includes a mass transit railway, taxis and buses, you should also try the Central-Mid-levels escalators. As the world’s lengthiest covered escalator located outside, it lets you see the island in a completely different way!

For some shopping, you can make a stop at Hollywood Road. While you’re there, be sure to head south to the lively Soho district with its restaurants, bars, and antique shops. Stanley Market is another place where you can buy clothing, food and even electronics in the open air.

If you’re looking for a way to cool down, the island is also home to Repulse Bay, which is an urban beach in the south. But if you want to get on some rides, see some marine mammals or try a cable car, then check out Ocean Park Hong Kong, which is an amusement and animal theme park.

Sports enthusiasts may be interested in Hong Kong’s main venue, Hong Kong Stadium, where football and rugby matches are common.
