This is Disney's new Mulan! We're looking at everything we know about the latest live-action Disney princess. Did you know that she isn't stranger to Hollwood films? In 2008, she starred alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li in “The Forbidden Kingdom” and in 2014 acted in “Outcast” with Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen. She's a singer! Though she may be better known for her acting, earlier in her career Liu Yifei spent time focusing on breaking into the music scene in Asia. In 2005, she signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment Japan and released her first single the following year. Finally she's the perfect fit for the role of Mulan! She's experienced in martial arts movies, she's fluent in english and she can sing! Bingo!

While she may not have become a household name with those films, that’s going to change.

At the beginning of the new millennium in China, the newspaper Guangzhou Daily named four young actresses the “Four Dan”, meaning the most financially bankable in film. But in 2009, a “New Four Dan” were named, and Liu Yifei was one of them. Her role in the TV series “The Return of the Condor Heroes,” along with her part in “The Forbidden Kingdom,” were cited as the reasons she was given the nod. She’s had some box office setbacks since then, but “Mulan” is unlikely to be one of them. …

Though she may be better known for her acting, earlier in her career Liu Yifei spent time focusing on breaking into the music scene in Asia. In 2005, she signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment Japan and released her first single the following year. According to its director, Niki Caro, the live-action remake of “Mulan” is not planned to be a musical, so sadly, we likely won’t get a chance to hear Yifei sing “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” or “Reflection”.  We can still dream!

… In China, Liu Yifei  has been given the moniker “Fairy Sister” because of her innocent and sweet appearance as well as the major roles she has chosen. Her ethereal and somewhat whimsical appearance and style have contributed to the image created for her. She is also sometimes referred to as “Crystal Liu”. With the advent of this latest role, the entertainment industry may have to come up with something different because for her role in “Mulan”, she’ll be portraying a warrior who is anything but demure.  

#1: She Is a Perfect Fit For the Role of Mulan

When Disney revealed that “Mulan” would be getting the live action treatment, it was clear to everyone that who was cast in the titular role would be vitally important. Liu Yifei was one of the many to be considered, but the fact that she moved to New York with her mother when she was 10,  and therefore speaks fluent English, along with her background in martial arts films, made her a perfect choice for “Mulan”. She has also worked on several period pieces, so her wealth of experience will prepare her for any challenge she receives on set. We can’t wait!
