Welcome to MojoPlays! Today, we’re looking at all the “Cyberpunk 2077” characters and explaining who they are – who will you want to see Night City with?
For this video, we’re looking at the game’s main characters and most prominent side characters and talking about their origins. There will be some minor spoilers ahead.
The most important character you’ll encounter in “Cyberpunk” is, of course, V, who ranges from an irredeemable criminal to a mercenary with a heart of gold depending on how you play. But V’s origin story isn’t set in stone because of the three lifepaths – though, you’ll still end up leading a life of crime regardless of choice.
One of the biggest choices you’ll have to make as V is which love interest you want to pursue – if you want to pursue any of them at all, that is. You’re always going to have two major love interests to choose from. For a masculine V, it’s between Panam Palmer and Kerry Eurodyne, while a feminine V can choose between Judy Alvarez and River Ward. Panam is a Nomad now working in Night City and regardless of whether you romance her, she’s still a very important ally to have for the endgame. Kerry, meanwhile, is a rockstar who used to be in Samurai, who you’ll first see in flashbacks to Johnny’s life before meeting him in-person. The very earliest romance option you’ll encounter, however, is Judy Alvarez, an esteemed braindance editor who helps V during the prologue and remains an important character who gives you some of the game’s best side quests. Finally, there’s River Ward, an easy option to miss, an honest cop who won’t take part in the NCPD’s corruption. If you choose to commit to any of the romance options they’ll feature prominently in the rest of the game and in its many endings.
One character you can’t choose whether or not you want anything to do with is Johnny Silverhand himself, played, of course, by Keanu Reeves. The lead singer and guitarist in the legendary band Samurai, Johnny’s digital personality construct plays a vital role in V’s journey after he gets stuck inside their head. And your treatment of Johnny can even open up an additional ending, so be careful what you say to him whenever he appears. Along with Johnny and Kerry, other members of Johnny’s ilk will show up as well. Alt Cunningham, Johnny’s ex-girlfriend and an extremely talented netrunner, plays an incredibly important part in the story, while Rogue, who was present for the bombing of Arasaka Tower in the 2020s, can become a vital contact for V after the prologue.
Another character you’ll be involved with no matter what is Jackie Welles, an ex-Valentino who originally hails from Heywood. Jackie is V’s partner in crime throughout the prologue, and you’ll meet him in one of three ways depending on your lifepath: he’s your way across the border into Night City if you’re a nomad; he tries to steal the same car as you if you’re a street kid; or he’ll be your childhood friend if you’re a corpo. You become best buddies no matter what, and Jackie’s the one who gets V and T-Bug involved with the Arasaka heist, planned by Dexter DeShawn and Evelyn Parker. T-Bug is a talented netrunner who goes way back with both V and Dex, while Dex himself is one of Night City’s premier fixers and V’s way into the “major leagues” of organized crime. Evelyn Parker, on the other hand, is the true brain behind the heist, who sets her sights on the Relic and is the only one able to get the necessary intel to pull off the job.
The last character vital to the heist is Delamain, an AI in charge of Night City’s most exclusive cab company. Your involvement with Delamin will lead you to yet another memorable side quest where you help him recapture some rogue taxis, all unique characters in their own right. Another character more machine than human is Lizzy Wizzy, a musician whose body is almost entirely mechanical after a nasty incident incapacitated her. She’ll offer you an interesting side job and is also played by Grimes, one of the game’s many, cool cameos. Early on, V also meets ripperdoc Viktor Vector, an old friend who helps you out even when you don’t have the eddies on hand. There’s also Misty, Jackie’s girlfriend who helps you decipher the Tarot card glitches you find in the city.
But V doesn’t just have allies, you’ll also make quite a few enemies, most prominently Yorinobu Arasaka, heir to the Arasaka fortune. After the Relic heist, V will be framed for a crime they didn’t commit courtesy of Yorinobu, and after the ruthless Arasaka bodyguard Takemura is sicced on V it looks like their story may end prematurely. But Takemura knows the truth about Yorinobu and becomes an unlikely ally himself, relying on V to guide him through Night City’s underworld after he’s ejected from the corporate lifestyle. And though Takemura was certainly a loyal bodyguard, the Arasakas are also protected by Adam Smasher, a brutal Night City legend who’s been around for decades. You have important showdowns against Smasher as both V and Johnny Silverhand, and he’s certainly formidable.
Of course, you’ll also run into the leaders and members of Night City’s many gangs. Maelstrom and its new leader Royce play a major role early on, and you’ll have some shady dealings with Pacifica’s Voodoo Boys during the course of the main story – in turn, they’ll send you for a fun boss fight against Sasquatch, leader of the Animals. Outside of the gangs, you’ll encounter many fixers in all of the city’s major districts. They’ll offer you side jobs to make some additional eddies and gain that cherished street cred, but they also won’t stop texting you to try and sell cars – there’s no way to avoid brushes with these characters. You can talk to representatives of the many corporations as well, with one memorable interaction coming from Meredith Stout, a Militech exec, early in the prologue – she’s even a minor romance option if you play your cards right.
All in all, “Cyberpunk 2077” has no shortage of colorful characters. Some you’ll love, some you’ll hate, and some are indispensable no matter your personal feelings.
