When Halloween comes around, always count on horror films to take home frightening amounts of cash. Despite being made on a relatively small budget of $5 million, βHappy Death Dayβ has recouped that money more than five times over, making $26 million domestically over the weekend. The slasher flick is another feather in the cap of Blumhouse Productions, who also released Get Out and Split to huge box office success earlier this year. The film about a college student whoβs killed on her birthday and has to constantly relive that day afterward has been considered by some as a horror film answer to Groundhog Day, even referencing the 1993 Bill Murray classic at one point in the movie. βHappy Death Dayββs weekend gross is also almost $11 million more than that of the much more expensive βBlade Runner: 2049β, which made just over $15 million during that same three day span.
The first teaser for the upcoming Marvel flick looked bonkers when it was released back in June, but this one just cranks it up to 100. Directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler (the director behind Creed), βBlack Pantherβ released its first full trailer on Monday. The preview gives us a closer look at the African nation of Wakanda, where TβChalla β played by Chadwick Boseman β returns to following the events of Captain America: Civil War, to claim the kingβs throne following the death of his father β though he faces competition from Michael B. Jordanβs Erik Killmonger. With a star-studded cast also featuring Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyongβo, Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis among others, the trailer is full of futuristic visuals, great action and fight sequences, and some sick aerial jumps for good measure. In other words, this trailer should get you very, very excited for when βBlack Pantherβ hits theatres February 16.
Before we get to our final entry, here are a couple new releases:
βOnly the Braveβ (2017)
βThe Killing of a Sacred Deerβ (2017)
Keeping with the naming convention last seen with βRogue Oneβ, the upcoming Han Solo movie finally has a proper name: βSolo: A Star Wars Storyβ, or simply βSoloβ. After many months of shooting β and the firing of initial directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller during production β the film is now helmed by Ron Howard, who revealed the name in a video posted on his Twitter account. With Alden Ehrenreich as the younger version of Harrison Fordβs iconic character, the film will also star Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, and notably Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. The movie will chronicle Han Soloβs younger days and adventures alongside Chewbacca, long before the events of A New Hope. While not a whole lot else is known about the film yet, get ready for the adventures of everyoneβs favourite scruffy-looking nerf herder as a young buck when βSolo: A Star Wars Storyβ hits the big screen on May 25, 2018.
