10 Hardest Bosses of 2024

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re counting down our choices for the most trying boss battles to come out over the course of this year!

Eigong

“Nine Sols” (2024)

It just wouldn’t be an end of year boss list without a bit of soulslike stirred into the mix, and Eigong is guaranteed to put you through your paces. Obsessed with immortality, this genius helmed the Eternal Cauldron Project, and in her drive brought about plague and death. So naturally it falls to you to put the old woman six feet under. Though that is no easy matter. Across three brutal stages, Eigong is going to come at you with blinding speed that will demand perfect parrying. Made all the worse when she starts going all out with those projectiles and delayed sword strikes.

Grovekeeper Topoda

“Another Crab’s Treasure” (2024)

Wandering off the beaten path in this underseas soulslike was a surefire way to find yourself embroiled in some savage optional boss battles, and none proved more of a challenge than Topoda. This mantis shrimp hits hard. The speed of his punches paired with a gnarly habit of whipping up sandstorms means you don’t know where his attacks are coming from at any given moment. And if your parrying isn’t on point, then there’s a good chance he’s going to breal your shell and leave you defenceless. Given how vital he is to levelling up our crab-tagonist, it’s a battle worth undertaking regardless.

True Devil Kazuya

“Tekken 8” (2024)

The King of Iron Fist is no stranger to challenging opponents, some of which have felt borderline broken over the years. Kazuya and his demonic alter ego sit comfortably among the pantheon of exhausting combatants that simply refuse to go down! You’ll lose count of how many rounds you have to knock out Kazuya, who is downright dirty when it comes to abusing counters, throws, and especially that damned laser beam. If he trips you up even once, you can expect to get juggled. Not even Jin’s awesome new Angel form is going to be enough to brush off his daddy’s brutal combos.

Amalia

“Unicorn Overlord” (2024)

Yes, that giant woman who uses a door for a shield and a blade that would make Cloud Strife blush is a beast of a boss fight. Who would have guessed? Amalia is fought twice during the course of the coliseum match up. First with a group of powerful warriors in their own right, serving as support, and again by her lonesome. Ironically enough, it’s when she goes solo that the difficulty really spikes. Possessed by a malevolent spirit, this amazon can dish out an ungodly amount of damage on your party, consecutively at that. Defeating her is certainly worth the grind, since she becomes an unlockable party member right after, not to mention open to marriage!

Orod

“The Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” (2024)

Every confrontation with the Immortals is a challenging one, pitting Sargon’s reflexes to their limit. Though to our mind, not even the final boss held a candle to this master of storms. It isn’t so much Orod’s size that’s a problem, it’s his insane range. This juggernaut swings around electrified anchors across the limited arena continually, leaving precious few windows to avoid damage, made all the worse when his later phase starts to drastically increase their area of effect. If you get stunned, you’re going to be temporarily unable to bust out your specials, which you’ll desperately need to shave off his health! Best get to somersaulting every chance you get if you want to avoid riding the lightning.

Sephiroth

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” (2024)

Every time the One Winged Angel shows up, you know you’re in for a hell of a time. While getting to play as Zack was wild, not even two buster swords were going to be able to easily deal with something as Lovecraftian as Sephiroth Reborn. You’ll have to cut away at each part of his now colossal body as Cloud while getting battered with maelstrom, as well as deal with a shadowy version of Bahamut via the rest of the party. This all culminates in one last showdown against the original, and yes, he will use Heartless Angel, so don’t you’d best not linger!

Raven

“Stellar Blade” (2024)

Whether you’re battling against her feathered form or as a fellow sword-user, Raven is one pissed off android who will relentlessly test your combat prowess. As the Unknown Naytiba, she will hack off your health with her talons, and if you aren’t careful, end you with an insta-kill move that is far from easy to cancel. Things only escalate when she goes mano y mano with her own blade – where she’ll string together combos that become increasingly complex with askew timings, so unless you are a deflect god, shrugging off her swings can feel borderline impossible!

Elizabeth

“Persona 3 Reload” (2024)

Ah yes, the timed and tested tradition of the Velvet Room attendants being the most difficult bosses to beat in a Persona game. No surprise to see that the remake stuck to this by having Elizabth serve as the final challenge for those who overcame every obstacle in Tartarus. Not only do you have to fight her solo, but unless you fulfil specific, unnamed conditions, then Elizabath is going to instantly end you without warning. You have to play by her rules, and even then she’ll unleash a crazy amount of damage. Any hope of survival entirely depends on a specific load out of some of the rarest and most difficult Personas and equipment to obtain. So best hope you’ve got yen to spare.

Erlang, the Sacred Divinity

“Black Myth Wukong” (2024)

Because apparently battling Wukong’s remains wasn’t enough, you’ve also got to face his nemesis if you truly want to prove yourself worthy. While unlocking the passage to fight Erlang is all kinds of tricky in of itself, the actual fight can be hell, given that this enforcer of the Celestial Court happens to have an extra defence bar that makes inflicting damage that much harder. He can cancel your transformations, blindside you with projectile volleys, and offers barely any room to catch your breath. It speaks to how demonstrably difficult the encounter is when we’d rather take on the Four heavenly giants any day than have to tango with one dude and his dog!

Promised Consort Radahn

“Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree” (2024)

Just when we thought the Lands Between had broken us with Malenia, along comes FromSoftware to demonstrate just how high they can reach when it comes to boss battles. Both in terms of spectacle…and unyielding, soul-shattering frustration. Radahn’s return was shocking enough, but as it happens he also comes armed with a new skill set that makes his previous encounter feel like battling the Soldier of Godrick. Gravity magic, blood magic, insanely fast sword swings, and that’s all before phase two! Throw in holy aftershocks and an insta-kill grapple courtesy of Miquella, and you have a boss that broke a generation of gamers.
